Movie Review: Sarkar Raj

Whosoever thought that Ram Gopal Varma is a spent force after some of his recent horrendous experiments, needs to watch Sarkar Raj. Although it might not be in the league of Satya, Company and even it's prequel Sarkar, it has enough meat to keep you interested and glued to your seats throughout. Backed by powerful performances, intriguing conspiracy in the plot, short and hard hitting - sometimes funny - dialogs, Sarkar Raj definitely marks the return of RGV.
The stage was already set in Sarkar with the ambiance, the aura and the Naagres. In Ramu's own words, there was not much of scope for him to ruin all that in Sarkar Raj. The story successfully takes the legacy of Subhash Nagre forward. And in fact by the end, the stage is all set for Sarkar 3 too - Chikoo Ki Sarkar (on a lighter note)! Like in Sarkar, Ramu unfolds the story in a similar fashion - first builds up the drama, then the conspiracy and ultimately breaks down the main politics.
I would not like to go much in details on the storyline. It's about the power game played by Sarkar's political opponents in an attempt to dethrone Sarkar and his raj and how initially Shankar and later Sarkar rise to the occasion. If in the original, Sarkar took the backseat in the second half, in this installment he takes the backseat in the first half but comes back with a vengeance in the second half. Ferocious like a wounded tiger, you gotta watch it to believe how terrific Amitabh Bachchan is - not that you do not already know it. He continues to amaze in each of his roles. He commands power, yet again.
Abhishek Bachchan takes the center stage for most part of the movie and gives a solid intense performance. His is a no non-sense character who knows his mind and what he is doing; speaking largely with his expressive eyes. There are some wonderful scenes between the father and the son. For example, the one where they discuss Vishnu's death and the one where Shankar tries to convince Sarkar of the new project. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has not much to do except a few dialogs in the beginning when she introduces Sheppard Power Plant to Sarkar and remains a silent spectator thereafter. For those of you who are looking for a romantic angle between Abhi and Ash, you might get disappointed as there is none as such except maybe a short moment.

The supporting cast of Govind Namdeo (Hassan Qazi), Sayaji Shinde (Kaanga), Dilip Prabhawalkar (Rao saab), Ravi Kaale (Chander), Rajesh Shringapure (Sanjay Somji) and Upyendra Limaye (Kantilal Vora) is just about perfect. Each one of them is very impressive. Tanisha, Supriya Pathak and Victor Banerjee have hardly any scope. Can't say about others but I certainly missed Kay Kay Menon (Vishnu).
Ramu is first rate as director. Some of the scenes and twists will leave you awestruck and will remind you of his genius. However, there are some glaring shortcomings too. His shot execution and camera angles are now becoming repetitive. Besides the climax misses the punch you would expect. The explanation Amitabh gives to Aishwarya on the whole conspiracy is a bit too long and tests audience's patience as well as intelligence. Some things could have been left self-explanatory.
Overall Sarkar Raj is a good watch and with all its pluses and minuses, I would give it 3 stars primarily for Ramu's return, the powerful Bachchans and a thick plot wherein it's tough to decipher the conspiracy.

chikoo ki sarkar :) lol well said
movie was good. i liked it. even the midnight show was sold out.
Re: Movie Review: Sarkar Raj
i missed jaya bachchan. that would have been complete family. haha. abhishek was good. but the best dialogue was the one by govind namdeo when he says "idea abhi puri tarah aaya nahin hai.." there were some other good dialogues too in the movie like
faisle galat nahin hote, nateeze galat hote hain
koi bhi faisla chunao se hona chahiye dawab se nahin
galti meri nahin thee par zimmedari meri thee
hamare yahan pehli galti nahin hoti, aakhiri galti hoti hai
and of course power cannot be given it has to be taken.
Great!!!

Re: Movie Review: Sarkar Raj
it was nice....and like you said its nice to see Ramu do some good work....although it was heavy dialogue after heavy dialogue and the background score was a little loud....it might be suitable for a horror movie....but overall nice time pass

Re: Movie Review: Sarkar Raj
MINDBLOWING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is the only word that comes to mind!!!
No matter what media says - in print or on tv, no matter what kind of reviews are written - in dailies, on the net or even in mags, no matter what kind of ‘people’s responses’ are shown on tv….. the movie is a hard-hitting slap on the face of people making ‘tamasha’ in the name of movies, on people seeing ‘nautanki’ in the name of films, on ‘reviewers’ writing craps in the disguise of writing reviews!
Fow quite some time now, I am seeing a totally partisan & biased approach against the Bachchans by those attached to media/news/papers/mags…. They think that they can impose their menial views on the broad mind of the public in general…. NO, FOOLS! YOU CANNOT!!! You cannot take one bit from the Bachchans! They are a breed totally different!
These reviewers/analysts/reporters can have the power of their medium with them, they can mis-use this platform to impose their two-bit minds on the general public, but they will NOT succeed!
Each of the three Bachchans, along with a host of other actors, have given a real stellar performance in SARKAR RAJ!
Hats off to all of you, guys!
This movie is what I call a movie with “substance”! It is not something with some oft-repeated naach-gana & some cheap nautanki…..
I think its high time Indian audience started appreciating CLASS and started rejecting CRASS…..
Good Movie Not Great: Absr once again saves the day 6/10
It was a good movie not great. once again proven that abjr is nothing without daddy. the most overrated actor in bollywood next to kareena. he was ok but totally boring. totally dull. he hardly cracked a smile. thank god he was killed in the film. now we don't have to see him in the future sarkar films. some people tried to make him the big deal in the film but he was not. he was likely to anchor the film and he did not do that. same boring expression in the film. aish was even worse. all she did was cry and cry and acted fake. her role was so unbelieveable. and just when she was going to make out with abjr he got shot and killed. boo hoo. good thing tanisha was killed too in the film b/c she can't act anyways. she is only in the films b/c of her family background.
now for the good stuff. absr. wow that guy is awesome. what a performance. he started great in the beginning then took a backseat to see if abjr can do anything then abjr died and absr came back and took over the reigns. he is one awesome guy. no wonder he is still around. and for the side villians all were great. did a great supporting job.
would have been a godd with a a stronger story. i almost feel asleep a lot of times.
wait for it on dvd but if you really want to see it see it b/c of absr. sorry abjr but you need to really get away from daddy
and is anybody going to see their fake unforgettable tour this year. the tickets are a ripoff. they are not work that much. the concert in my opinion is going to flop.

Nice movie and a wonderful review !!
Re: Movie Review: Sarkar Raj
though it’s not as good as the 1st one- sarkar, there is some good acting by amitabh in sarkar raj! aishwarya looks good as the high-powered business woman, and abhishek does the strong-silent-hero to perfection. However, the story is not something that moves you or even the characters…but what was awesome? The last scene where Ash is sitting on the “throne” saying,”Aye, chai la” heehee
Re: Movie Review: Sarkar Raj
Concept was good, although it was not played well.
Re: Movie Review: Sarkar Raj
