Movie Review: Jodhaa Akbar

To start off, let me just say that Jodhaa Akbar is more closer to Swades than Lagaan. What I mean by that is it's an average movie that is long and doesn't necessarily care if the viewers are involved in the proceedings on screen. Without sounding too harsh, it feels that Ashutosh Gowarikar without Aamir Khan is just an average director, who thinks he can make mega movies, but he doesn't have the talent to handle subjects like these.
Let's see why this movie is a proof that AG is an average director. The movie has great storyline, which I'm sure we've all heard a billion times so that wasn't the attraction, Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya deliver great performances, which again should be expected. The supporting cast did their best and sets were no Sanjay Leela sets, but they're fine (we'll come back to that). So more than half the job was done, all Ashutosh Gowarikar had to do was tell a story in a way so that it's fun. I remember at least 10-15 times in the movie, where I looked at my watch and wondered why is that scene in the movie and more importantly when is this movie going to end. There were no sequences that would make your pulse race or make you look forward to what was going to happen. The scenes were done quite unimaginatively, literally, it was like he took inspiration for those love scenes, war scenes (which were seriously awful) and other drama scenes from several other Hindi movies (again not bad, but just nothing new about them).
Lot of people I talked to said that the movie was really long and if they had cut it short, it would have been a good movie. Maybe, but if you are not a good story teller, doesn't matter if you have 5 minutes or 3 hours, they will just seem like a lifetime for your audience. Which is what I think is the problem with this movie - just plain, boring way of telling such a great story. Seriously Discovery of India did a much better job than most of these period movies.
I think what would have helped would have been to focus on one theme. I mean Ashutosh Gowarikar is no Francis Ford Coppola, so he should have either focused on one of the many traits of Akbar - the lover, the great king or the great warrior. Trying to show all three things in a movie, just means that you are not devoting enough time on any.
Now let's talk about the good things about the movie. Once again its a timeless story that has a lot of room for interpretation and even if its told as a biography, which this movie attempts to do, its still a truly remarkable story - that has a love angle, war angle, treachery angle, I mean pretty much all the ingredients of an epic. Then, Hrithik Roshan just completely morphed into the role of Akbar. If you see him, especially in the second half, he doesn't remind you at all of the bare chested Hrithik dancing in Dhoom 2. Aishwarya in a follow up of her great job in Guru, delivers another good performance. Sonu Sood, Ila Arun and other supporting cast is good, although they don't have much of a scope in the movie. The songs were not needed but they are fine, not the best ARR composition, but some songs were good.
So its not a total loss if you go and watch that movie, it's just that with that kind of crew you expect a much better result then what came out. I guess Ashutosh isn't as demanding as the perfectionist Aamir Khan :-) so most people just mailed it in. The other glaring lack of creativity that you see in Ashutosh, is the creation of sets. I mean seriously Akbar is one of the greatest emperors in the history and if you are watching a movie that deals with his love story, I am expecting something grander than a Devdas. This was not even close. I think Karan Johar or Sanjay Leela would have done a MUCH better job in handling those aspects. The other thing that really baffles me is the inability of Indian directors to shoot good war scenes. It's definitely not the lack of money, its just the lack of imagination. I mean they'll shoot a song in 15 different locations in the world, so they definitely have the money. The war scenes in this movie were a joke. There was one army that Akbar was fighting that seemed like they had dressed for a Garba dance and not a war....
Anyways I can go on and on, but you get the picture. Everything was there, but the most important thing about making a movie, which was missing here, was a desire to make a truly great movie. It's very disappointing to see that someone who gets hailed as one of the top directors in India can deliver a mediocre product like this. It's bad because Hrithik gave a great performance, much better than he does for his dad because he was hoping this could be his Mughal-e-Azam, but unfortunately it wasn't even close.

I trust Moviewalah's reviews. So will skip it and wait for the dvd. Man i dont have patience to watch 3.5 hr movie. Indiafm gave 4 stars but they write for money. Pay them and they will give u 5 stars. This site looks more genuine. Thanks for the review buddy.
Re: Movie Review: Jodhaa Akbar
Is it that average?
Re: Movie Review: Jodhaa Akbar
Really????????
Re: Movie Review: Jodhaa Akbar
word....it was long and boring
Re: Movie Review: Jodhaa Akbar
This Movie review is total rubbish! I saw the movie. It is the best and totally worth it. Please, do not confuse the audience. Hrithik and Aishwarya have done their best. and their onscreen chemistry is great.
Re: Movie Review: Jodhaa Akbar
Well, the movie sucks. I don't agree even with the "good" parts you have mentioned here :)
But oh! Swades was good!
Re: Movie Review: Jodhaa Akbar

Re: Movie Review: Jodhaa Akbar
"I think Karan Johar or Sanjay Leela would have done a MUCH better job in handling those aspects."
--- Karan Johar !!! Get a life man... This comment tells what kind of reviewer you are...
This movie is one of the best period movie ever... Man, it was over-packed in the theatre and all the audience were glued till the last moment...
Re: Movie Review: Jodhaa Akbar
This is unnecessary bashing of a great film. People go watch this movie....
Re: Movie Review: Jodhaa Akbar
I don't think the reviewer is bashing the movie or any of the actors.....the gist of the review is that this is a good movie, but given what AG had to work with this could have been a truly legendary movie like Lagaan......which it is not..... so average movie....yes, classic....no way
Re: Movie Review: Jodhaa Akbar
Just came from JodhaaAkbar movie. It's okay to watch the movie for the first time. Pls. watch it in theaters if at all you want to watch it. On DVD you may not a get a feel of the movie. Hritik did a wonderful job. Aishwarya does't look gorgeous. She looks okay. But I like the picturisation of the songs.
Re: Movie Review: Jodhaa Akbar
must watch, must watch, must watch....
Do not miss it.
Re: Movie Review: Jodhaa Akbar
Aslam has given a very negative review which is regrettable. I do not know what bone has he got to pick with Ashutosh G!
The film on the other hand is grand and a treat to the eyes. The colourful sets and the attention to detail is incredible. It seemed to me that the Sohrab Modi films of the yesteryear were reincarnated but a 1000 times better in content, presentation and style. In the current trend of predominant "punjabi"dialogues and lyrics taking over the Hindi films it was heartwarming to hear dialogues in chaste Urdu/Farsi again reminding of the bygone era of the 50s/60s hindi films.
The acting, the dialogues and the music all are worth the three and a half hours of the movie. It is technically comparable to Brad Pit's TROY! I would say. I would highly recommend the film which is sure to bag most of the awards!
Re: Movie Review: Jodhaa Akbar
watched the film, and truly... felt cheated. to add to my misfortune, I had to pay the ticket money in pounds and not in rupees. wouldnt have been so upset if I had watched it in India. I agree with this review. I loved Lagaan, really liked Swades, but this one really shocked me. It could have been so much better... and the worst thing the movie has done to me and my girlfriend is to tarnish the great akbar's image... joking, but it really made a nice try at it. Its not one of the worst films ever, but was a disappointment.
Re: Movie Review: Jodhaa Akbar
VJ its great that you enjoyed the sets and the dialogues in urdu/farsi....its your personal opinion and I'm truly glad you liked it......but seriously please don't even compare it to TROY, not that Troy is a great war movie.....but it's still much better "technically" than this one.....for one the war scenes at least look real.....
And I didn't give it a negative review, I did say that the movie is good, but it's not a classic which should've been a gimme given the talent associated with this movie.....
Re: Movie Review: Jodhaa Akbar
i walked out ... it was an insult to akbar and his rajput princess....
who was gallant ... and brave and never spoke about shanti .. and peace .. was a royal warrior till his last breath .. not a person who was defeated by his own wife in combat .. what alaugh .. he must be crying in his graveyard ....
Re: Movie Review: Jodhaa Akbar
yeah..i haven't watch this movie yet soo i can't say how good it iss or how bad it iss...or if its just average but i am not a big ashutosh g. fan but i still want to watch this movie for the performance of hrithik and ash...everyone seems to be saying that their performances were greatt...soo i would love to see some great work on the big screen. :)
Re: Movie Review: Jodhaa Akbar
The movie is highly disappointing. Too long, dragging and boring. Barring one song, the rest of the numbers are not catchy at all. A R Rahman gave us insipid scores once again. Aishwarya does not look great, her age showed clearly. Hrithik, though handsome, does not have the looks and personality to play Akbar at all.
I felt cheated and wish I could claim my money I spent for the ticket back.
Re: Movie Review: Jodhaa Akbar
"Karan johar would have handled this better?"
I lost my trust on moviewalah reviews.
This is a brilliant film.
Re: Movie Review: Jodhaa Akbar
Dholz don't get too excited.....all Aslam said was Karan Johar can definitely have much better sets than Ashutosh Gowarikar.....he's just comparing one aspect....
Re: Movie Review: Jodhaa Akbar
dholz, you r a total dhol hahahaha
Re: Movie Review: Jodhaa Akbar
aslam bad review. i wonder which movie you went to see to give such a bad review.
it is a good movie, the chemistry is great between akbar and jodha. this movie could have been up there with the bollywood movie if the fight scene were shot better with a better camera. other than that i give this move 4 out of 5.
Re: Movie Review: Jodhaa Akbar
meant to say "hollywood movie if the fight scene were shot better witha a better camera."
Re: Movie Review: Jodhaa Akbar
@Anonymous....I'm sorry I'm not into 3.5 hour long love stories where nothing happens on screen....movie making is a team sport (unless Amitabh is on screen then its an individual effort) so no matter how good the chemistry was on screen between the lead actors.....if everyone is not upto the mark the result will be mediocre.....in this case AG and the editor didn't do their job.....so we ended up watching a bland 3.5 hour love/war/biography.....
and here's my advice to you......start watching some good Hollywood movies, because this is no where close to the ones I've seen.....
Re: Movie Review: Jodhaa Akbar
Ok reading all the comments it seems that most people agree it's an average movie.....and for those who don't let me tell you that 2.5 stars is not a "BAD" rating by any standards.....it's an average rating, which I think is reasonable for this movie......
Honestly we know lot of anonymous people on the web like to talk trash.....but if you honestly feel this is one of the best movies you've ever seen and you think that I'm on drugs or sth.....then I have only one advice for you - " You seriously need to watch more movies"......
as far as Hollywood comparison is concerned, I am not even going to go there, because a lot of people feel that its unfair to compare Bollywood movies with Hollywood movies. (although I just think it's a representation of the mindset that we had back when we only drove Ambassador cars and were so against phoren companies....so people who say that we shouldn't compare ourselves with Hollywood movies are just afraid of competition....) Anyways back to the argument, so I am not comparing this to any Hollywood movie, but if you come out here and say that this was as good as any Hollywood movie but the war scenes weren't good....?? I mean that shit doesn't even make any sense....so what movie are you comparing this to? Harold and Kumar?
So just make up your mind, if we compare it with Hollywood movies then we do so with movies like Braveheart, Gladiator, Spartacus......and if we do that then this movie was a joke compared to these classics.....actually if it makes you feel better I did think that this movie was way better than Alexander.... so let's leave Hollywood alone for public debate and do the comparison only in your mind....
sorry for the rant.....just wanted to clarify a few things....
Re: Movie Review: Jodhaa Akbar
This just shows that the highest rating an "aslam" can give a "gowrikar" is that he is average. He can never get himself to praise a "gowrikar", even when he is deserving.
Re: Movie Review: Jodhaa Akbar
I have been reading all the comments on Aslam's review and the movie Jodhaa Akbar. If nothing else, it sure provided some interesting reading. I was anyway going to watch it. Not because I am a Hrithik-Ash or Ashutosh Gowarikar fan but because I love cinema. The only thing which kept me away for 1 week was the snow and major thunder storm in BFE (don't ask me the meaning of BFE as I am not going to tell you), which resulted in the severest winter in the last 100 years. Some kind of history, huh? Now back to sunny land, I have been wondering since yesterday night that why did I come back. Was snow not better than 3.5 hours of torture?
Don't get taken aback. I am not the one who criticizes movies. In fact, I love them and watch them as a fan. But here I would like some answers from AG. One, what did he want to show us? History or Love Story? Two, why did he have such pathetic supporting actors? Why the movie was freaking 3.5 hours long?
For it was neither any Historical extravaganza nor any great love story. Leave alone great, it was not even a sweet love story seen umpteen times in Bollywood. Some of the wicked ploy of Maham Anga looked straight out of Ekta Kapoor's soaps. As Aslam pointed out above, Ashutosh clearly has no sense as to when to enter a scene and when to exit it. Some scenes started off well but were stretched far too long.
This could well have been a love story of any two individuals. Why did he have to use Akbar and Jodhaa's names? The movie hardly took us to that era. War scenes were much better in B R Chopra's tv series Mahabharata. History was much better told in Bharat Ek Khoj. And we have certainly had lots of better love stories. Come to think of it, Ashutosh Gowarikar spent 2+ years and 40+ crores for this? Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan are the only saving grace in this movie.
With easy finance, Hrithik-Ash and Lagaan behind him, Ashutosh still ended up converting what should have been a walk in the park to running a marathon, uphill, on crutches.
Re: Movie Review: Jodhaa Akbar
it wasnt a bad movie.. but it way too long.. it could have been easily cut down to 2.5 hrs.. there were many scenes like u said where ur just like this has no relevance with the story..got boring at times.. like the last battle scene.. man that was dull.. best shot scene was probably Akbar taming the elephant..aiswariya rai, finally showed signs of good acting.. she was amazing in some parts.. overall not a bad movie, i learned something too.. editing was just horrible.. and btw Karan Johar is overrated director, he has his moments but he wouldnt be able to direct this type of movie...
Re: Movie Review: Jodhaa Akbar
ahem..lover boy Akbar caught in some kitchen politics !!!! Believe me this movie was a real pain in the ass (literally!!!!..imagine sitting thru 3.5.hrs of a boring family drama set in Akbar's palace). Hats of to AG for torturing Jodha- Akbar in their graves, may their soul rest in peace, amen.
Re: Movie Review: Jodhaa Akbar
I agree whole-heartedlly with Mr Aslam. We go to movies purely for entertainment and if eventually, all have to sit through a 3.5 hours of boring epci like "Jodhaa Akbar", we are sorely disappointed. Here in Singapore, we have to fork out 12 Singapore dollars (about 300 Rupees) to watch this movie. And many viewers are restless and some even walked out during the screening. Come on, Mr AG's earlier directorial effort. "Lagaan" lasts for nearly four hous but he could hold the viewers' interest throughout. How come he could not repeat this task in "Jodhaa Akbar"? I suppose he has no talent to handle a historical epic like this as mentioned by Mr Aslam.
I am a die-hard fan of Hrithik and Aishwarya and went to watch this movie, bright-eyed with expectations. But they seem to be spent forces. While Hritihik is miscast as Akbar (the late Prithviraj Kapoor in "Mugha;-E-Azam" fits the role to perfection with his regal voice and bearing), age seems to be catching up with Aishwarya. You do not need mega stars to pull your audiences. Look at the recent "Taare Zameen Par". It has only Aamir Khan as the well-known star but the treatment Mr Aamir has given to this gem of a movie is simply fantastic. It is a big crowd puller here.
In fact, if Hollywood could give us the infamous Elizabeth Taylor-Richard Burton long, boring epic "Cleopatra", Bollywood gives us this "Jodhaa Akbar". Money was spent like water for costumes, sets and the like in both movies, but they evoke more yawns than interest.
Re: Movie Review: Jodhaa Akbar
Its clear that the reviewer is just prejudiced. He thinks Karan Johar is better than Ashutosh Gowrikar. The standards at Moviewalah seem to be dropping with each of such reviews. As for the movie, it was quite a good experience and you would have lost something if you trusted Moviewalah/Aslam.
Re: Movie Review: Jodhaa Akbar
You dumbass, the reviewer does not say that KJo is better. Read it again to understand what he is saying. Audience like you get what you deserve. You like trash so you get trash.
Re: Movie Review: Jodhaa Akbar
It's as shitty as Asoka and Mangal Pandey. Complete distortion of history. Mughal-e-Azam still stands taller. Actually there is no comparison with that classic. Ashutosh Gowarikar is a sadak-chhap director, who used to act as a small timer in movies like Naam and Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa. Then he directed his first shitty movie Pehla Nasha with Deepak Tijori. No one even knows abt that shit. Then fortunately he made friends with Aamir Khan and made Baazi, which was ok kinda movie - tolerable only because of Aamir. Lagaan was clearly ghost directed by Aamir Khan as now we can see his skills in Taare Zameen Par. Swades proved more to be a documentary as Ashutosh Gowarikar is not a good story teller by any standards, the fact established again with yawning Jodhaa Akbar.
Re: Movie Review: Jodhaa Akbar
Some people take pleasure in calling good movies trash just to try and proclaim that they think they are superior to those involved in the moviemaking. Also, calling something trash just because you didnt like it when others might have liked it, shows your narrow-mindedness. This disrespect for others opinion is highly uncalled for and just shows the poor personality of whoever wrote that.
Re: Movie Review: Jodhaa Akbar
I watched this movie last nigh, and ooops didnot like it. Everthing looked so fake....eventhoug I didnot like Hirthink as Akber's Role.
Re: Movie Review: Jodhaa Akbar
This is the worst movie review I have ever read, and Aslam dear go and learn the art of reviewing movies. You know what? If u dont understand the things yourself better be silent and try to understand them before you set out on to explain it to others or for that fact review it. You seem to be the kind of person who criticized Ashutosh Gowrikar when Swadesh was released, but later when it bagged national awards and was called an elite's film, u changed ur views. It Sucks. Loser!!!
Infact, the movie is a great one. The sets are Opulent ,grandiose and the best to depict that era. People would have never seen anything of this sort(not just in patches , but overall). A spectacular performance put up by the lead roles as well as the supporting cast. Hrithik is amazing.
A must must watch for all.
Re: Movie Review: Jodhaa Akbar
Aslam's review reminds me of this quote :
"Everyone is entitled to an opinion....Even those who are wrong"
Re: Movie Review: Jodhaa Akbar
Mr. Aslam,
"it feels that Ashutosh Gowarikar without Aamir Khan is just an average director, who thinks he can make mega movies, but he doesn't have the talent to handle subjects like these" , this is a very strong statement. If you are a fan of amir khan, good, then keep it with in you. Do not take it on others. How many successful movies did Amir give with AG? Lagaan was a different subject. Given the subject of Jodha Akbar (which is apparently risky particularly in India), I think AG, and all the crew did a wonderful job. All the audiences were glued to their seats till end. Many of the people I talked to, never realized the length of the movie. Hritik and Aishwarya had got into Akbar and Jodha's skins. Well played. Many of us have wathced all the movies you have mentioned in your reply. Still, JA definitely deserves 3.5 to 4 out of 5.
Re: Movie Review: Jodhaa Akbar
I think this movie was pretty good, albeit long and at times uninspired. What I like best about this movie is the part that Indians are reluctant to talk about. Namely, the all-India nature of the film. I thought it was great seeing the diversity of Hindustani peoples from all over the continent portrayed in this film. I also like the theme of bringing the whole of India together. And I especially liked (I know some of you will spit up your tea when I say this) I especially liked that there were no white people mentioned in the film and no English was spoken of or known by anyone. Those were the days. I'm not strictly a race-man, but come on, a lot of what happened to our beloved land after whitey arrived was a damn shame. Well worth seeing, this movie.
Re: Movie Review: Jodhaa Akbar
Superb movie.Hrithik has delivered his best ever performance in Jodhaa Akbar.
Re: Movie Review: Jodhaa Akbar
oh Pls ..your take on Jodhaa Akbar is crap. I can't imagine you're the same person who appreciated Sanjay lila bhansali's Saawariya. I felt so good to hear you taking such a different take on it. And here you are tearing India's rare historical grandeur opus to bits and pieces. Too bad...You crib about the length of this movie- I feel its better to see a 3 hour sensible movie then some 2.5 hour glitzy yash chopra churn out. And don't forget originally all hindi movies were 3 hour long. And don't even talk about war scenes- do you think you were writing review for Troy???
Read this -http://mindflirting.wordpress.com/2008/02/21/jodhaa-akbar-th-experience/
at least this ones not partial.
Re: Movie Review: Jodhaa Akbar
Well its realy easy to sit on a chair n start criticizing others but its realy realy hard to do something on ur own...JA is good movie n AG done a good job
Re: Movie Review: Jodhaa Akbar
I does not agree with the review given here. The movie is awesome, Hrithik and Ash delivered their best performances. Strongly Recommended...!!!
