Movie Review: Saawariya !!

Kudos to Sanjay Leela Bhansali for creating another masterpiece and thus once again proving his mettle in the face of today’s tough competition in the Hindi film industry. Direction, cinematography, music, acting, story… you name it and Bhansali has managed to do perfect justice to each part of his film. Saawariya is the perfect love story that has emerged after a long time and makes a strong impression with its simplicity and innocence in the face of an era where movies have become all about outdoor locales and a few hot and glistening bodies dancing to the mechanical tunes of some DJ….
Ranbir Raj (Ranbir Kapoor) is an aspiring musician, joy spreader happy go lucky sort of a lad who comes to an unknown city in the hope of becoming the lead singer of RK Bar. He is a simpleton and an outright winner of hearts who falls in love with a damsel called Sakina (Sonam Kapoor) who in turn waits for some stranger every night on a bridge in their town. Ranbir tries hard to win the heart of Sakina but fails to do the same as her real prince charming Imaan (Salman Khan) finally shows up and takes her away forever, thus leaving Ranbir once again lonely and heartbroken.
The story has been adapted from Fyodor Dostoevsky’s “White Nights” and some people after watching Saawariya have been complaining that Saawariya has been the weakest story told by Bhansali so far. Well, the original story in itself is as much as has been cinematically constructed by Bhansali and perhaps it is by far the best way in which it could have been adapted. The songs may seem to be arising after very short whiles but the music also is so refreshing and beautifully woven that it further adds to the romance of the film. Lyrics have been fashioned by Sameer on the lush tunes of Monty. The title track, “Saawariya reprise”, “Jab Se Tere Naina”, “Masha Allah”, “Yoon Shabnami”, “Thode Badamaash” and “Jaane Jaan” are simply a treat for the ears.
The newcomers Ranbir and Sonam have proved that they are powerhouses of talent and have a long innings to play. Ranbir Kapoor is already a superstar. His portrayal of Ranbir Raj of Saawariya has been most natural and spontaneous. It’s as if he has completely absorbed the role in himself and his characterization is definitely the most powerful. Thus sometimes it also seems that Ranbir’s character is slightly overshadowing the character of Sakina. But Sonam has no dearth of talent in herself and she has certainly confirmed it too. Apart from them, it certainly is a delight to watch the veterans- Zohra Sehgal as Ranbir’s landlady and Begum Para as Sakina’s grandmother. Rani Mukherjee in the role of Gulab Ji is apt and so is Salman Khan as Imaan though his role is the briefest.
The story of Saawariya is the story of a few nights and Bhansali has created the perfect city (which is a combination inspired by the cities of St. Petersburg, Venice and Banaras) and the perfect atmosphere to take the audiences away from the reality world and into the world of Ranbir and Sakina for the most ideal two and a half hours. The camera angles, the lighting, the art direction, editing, the use of simple props such as an umbrella has also been done most aesthetically. The constantly ambient tones of blue and green through the frames of Saawariya exude the dreaminess of the story and make it all look nothing less than beautiful. One can also not fail to notice the abundant references made to the legendary Raj Kapoor. Ranbir also tries to imitate his dad as he speaks the famous dialogue of Rishi Kapoor from Karz- “Kya tumne kabhi kisi se pyaar kiya….”
In short, Saawariya is flawless and a hundred… thousand times better than Om Shanti Om (which is nothing but trash)… however, go for Saawariya only if you are interested in a simple and sweet story set in the backdrop of a dream world. Also be prepared to feel overwhelmed and tearful at the end…. Nonetheless, Saawariya is certainly some splendid cinema!!!!!!!!

Re: Movie Review: Saawariya !!
Awesome movie. Can't stop replaying it. The Kapoor's are doing pretty well for a start.
Re: Movie Review: Saawariya !!
The movie is very monotonous. It gets a bit boring after a while. The story is nice and making is good but its really boring and slow.Compared all other Sanjay Leela Bhansali films (Black, devdas, Hum dil de Chuke Sanam) Sawariya is the worst of the lot!
Re: Movie Review: Saawariya !!
I tried hard to figure out if it was a period movie or Omung Kapoor and SLB trying to show off their creative prowess. Everything was loud, dark and mysterious but for no particular reason. Which era had the gondolas and the ma sarawati painted on the walls in two consecutive screen shots??
The characterisation was poor and rani mukherjee really needs to quit playing the call girl, kotha resident roles. And if at all this was a period movie why was she speaking mumbaiya Hindi???? Why is sakina on that bridge?? The whole scene where ranbir is trying to convince Zohra sehgal is mind numbing....
The only good thing about this production is the music and the new actors with the right guidance and some good scripts and characterisation could be tomorrow's super stars. But for now Saawariya is a no go...
Re: Movie Review: Saawariya !!
Compared to OSO this was a much less entertaining film and doesn't appeal to everyone. In my opinion OSO was a much better final product and provided good bang for the buck whereas Sawariya didn't fulfill expectations. It is a good debut by the new faces in bollywood and they will probably go a long way, but are no match for the star power of SRK and the masala in OSO.
worst movie ever
The worst movie ever in bollywood film industry.......... well bansal the stage setup was pretty good but every movie has to have some story..... every 5 minutes a song you gotta be kiddin me.......... worst movie i spend my $ 10 on......... worst ............. worst .............. worst.................
This movie SUCKED. Om Shanti Om Rules
i had to go this piece of crap film with my girlfriend and i must say it was soooooooooooooooooooooooooo boring that we sneaked out this film and got into the theater that was showing om shanti om and that was an awesome film. i saw about 3/4 of saawariya and i can about it was that it had a stupid plot. here is a loser guy (ranbir) who has nothing to do. falls in love with a girl that is waiting for her love (salman) did he not get the point. and her pairing with salman looking more like uncle-niece pairing. so awkward. ditto for rani-ranbir she looked more like her elder sister. the songs were okay many people in the theater looked bored like me.
sanjay leela bansali is the most overrated director in bollywood. all he ever does is ripoff others stories or films. he is no way original. most of his films (hum dil de chuke sanam) copy of woh7din, devdas (devdas), black (a miracle worker) and even saawariya (white nights). his only film that i like was khamoshi. too bad he can't make movies like that. he was on the crap cover of filmfare as one of the top 7 directors. bullcrap.
avoid this film at all costs. as for the newcomers: totally overhyped. both did okay jobs. nothing extrodinary. a television actor would have done a better job. ranbir can act but sonam can't. they did not stick out but considering they are son and daughter of rishi and anil kapoor they will get film roles just like how we had to bear abjr, zayed, esha, fardeen, amrita arora (she is only sticking around thanks to her sister) films. as for the information absr only did a cameo in om shanti om only if his son got a role in that film too which his cameo got overtaken by akshay kumar who was awesome.
this film has to go down as one of the worst films of the year if not decade. it tops my list over jhoom barabar jhoom (stupid), no smoking (what the f##k what is story about), lage chunari mein daag (stupid film), big brother (pathetic except for that crazy fight scene), shaka laka boom boom (upen patel can't act)
Re: Movie Review: Saawariya !!
Wow Vijay Denanath.....I do feel sorry for you, but Big brother....c'mon do you ever watch trailers? why would you even go and watch a movie like that
Re: Movie Review: Saawariya !!
who pays you to write such reviews????.....bhansali or kapoor??
4/5 to saawariya!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
not even bhansali would have rated his film 4/5 after watching the final product
Re: Movie Review: Saawariya !!
To all of you who have criticised Saawariya - this was expected as this movie is not for masses but only CLASSES !! Indian audience has still not matured enough to appreciate the beauty of such a creative , artistic and adorable movie . People have become so used to masala stuff and crap of bollywood that art and creativity has taken a back seat and it takes guts to make such a film. Hats off to Sanjay Lila Bhansali for Sawariya .....sadly people here are not worthy of watching such work ...... keep down to SRK crap guys ...thats more ur standard
Re: Movie Review: Saawariya !!

I love Saawariya and will watch it over n over again !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 Kudos to SLB
