Movie Review: Laaga Chunari Mein Daag

'Laaga Chunari mein Daag'….If you look at the star cast which includes my favorite Jaya Bachchan and a director who did more than an adequate job in Parineeta you would walk into the movie with some expectation. I got to say that at best it was a mixed bag…Very predictable storyline in which you would expect a lot of emotional drama, however I do think that they managed not to overdo that.  

There is a lot of Rani in this movie, I felt she got disproportionately high share of airtime considering the plethora of big names there…I adore Konkana, and I will continue to do the same after this movie…she is natural. Abhishek and Kunal have done a good job in their limited role, by no means a cameo……what left me wanting was under-utilized acting capabilities of Jaya Ji and Anupam Kher. For whatever opportunity Jaya was allowed there were signs of brilliance, watch for her expressions… Hema…goodness she's still gorgeous…but for her dialogue delivery.

I have heard so much about Banares's ghats and I think they did a pretty decent job of photography there…but I do have to say that direction lacked finesse at times, how would you justify 'chhotu chai lana' types of stuff in a swanky office of a premier advertising agency…I am not sure if these are purposely left for exaggerated dramatization for certain types of junta…music is good, there is a peppy number, and then a more classical Shubha Mudgal, and then Rekha Bharadwaj…. I would say worth watching once…
