Movie Review: Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag
![]()
Ram Gopal Varma had never seen the Sholay that I had seen. At best RGV had seen the body of Sholay and missed out 'feeling' the soul of the film. Sholay is not about 2 people hired by an ex-cop to avenge the murder of his loved ones. That is the body of the film. What I call soul of the film was the special relationship that each character had among themselves and with the audience. The special identification of audience with them and their relationships made them eternally lovable characters and sholay a timeless classic. Alas, good camerawork and enhanced technology cannot compensate for something that is beyond matter.
Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag (RGVKA) gives me one more reason to dislike remakes. After the murder of Devdas and Don, I think RGVKA just proves to be what is best termed as the 'last nail in the coffin' of remakes. In an age when mediocrity is being confused for ingenuity, films like – Mother India, Mughal-e-Azam, Ganga Jamuna, Guide, Pyasa, Deewar, Amar Akbar Anthony et al should be left to themselves. At best re-release them but don't remake them.
I know Sholay is worth its name because it cannot be remade. Also it was always a blasphemy to even think of such dastardly act. But it is not the alleged blasphemy that invites scorn but the treatment of the remake which stands out as a masterly misadventure. So what did RGV miss? There was Veeru and there was Jai but the friendship never seemed to be there. There was a Thakur but the reasons of why he thought Veeru and Jai could be trusted were not there. There was a Ramgarh but the terror was not there. There was a Basanti but she could not build the love with Dhanno (laila in this case). There was a Radha too but the transition of a youthful girl into a traumatized widow and her subtle development of love with Jai was just not there. Yes, jai did go to talk to mausi about veeru's marriage but the serious-hilarious presentation of his case was absent. RGV made the body and that too shabbily but forgot the essence, the spirit. It seemed for most part of the film that he thought Sholay as a disparate mixture of events and took special care not too miss any. I concede, he did exceedingly well with the checklist and that is what the picture was reduced to.
What about the helping hand that dialogues and music provide? Music has been the bane of bollywood in recent past. No one expected an RD Burman but wasn't a good dosti song and a good holi song important for the film? Of the horrible two, Holi one was still better. Mehbooba song was anyway a tweaked one from the original so it doesn't really qualify as a novel work. No wonder then that RGV had to fall back on the music of 'yeh dosti' from original film to somehow drive home some effect when Jai died.
If there was any confusion then the dialogues made it absolutely clear that RGVKA is far from being a serious cinematic exercise. The constant Bush-Osama, US war on Iraq and US-Al Qaeda invocation turned out to be boring rhetoric of intellectually bankrupt dialogue writers. The dialogues of none of the characters were written with a motive of bringing out the character. It was assumed that people have already seen Sholay.
Although the film erred in all aspects but the field where RGV's monumental ignorance of understanding characters of Sholay became most conspicuous was its cast selection. Viru-Jai were pathetic if they ever meant to be a replacement for Dharmendra and Amitabh. While Ajay Devgan has no business doing comedy, new-comer Prashant Raj's height would have been the only criteria for his selection as Jai. Rajpal Yadav is wasted with an ugly script, which somehow tries to relate his 'dushmani' with Veeru & Jai and Soorma Bhopali of the original. Sushmita Sen, for limited fault of hers, fails to build the transition that I had mentioned above. But nothing has been as disgraced as the character of Basanti. The problem with Nisha Kothari is more fundamental. She cannot act (period).
There were only three characters which are the saving grace of the film. I am prepared to admit that this was purely coincidental!! Bachchan excels as Babban. In a mediocre film with below average script he makes the character of Babban ferocious, unpredictable and idiosyncratic. He bolsters the saying that there can be a bad Amitabh Bachchan movie but there cannot be a bad Amitabh Bachchan performance. He is at his menacing best. Mohanlal faulters with his Hindi but not with his acting. The Gabbar-Thakur equation is the only success that RGV can boast of. The scene were Babban cuts his fingers is the best scene of the film. Tambhe (played by Sushant Singh) has been an improvement over the character of Sambha. But too little an effort for too insignificant a character.
Overall kudos to RGV for trying to do something that others could not even dream of but a big kick on his butt for making such a hoax. It should be used to educate other directors of the futility of remakes and in giving them guidelines - on how films should not be made.

Is it really that bad? I was planning to watch this weekend but going by the review I better plan something else...RGV is an idiot I always knew it after watching his remake of his own Shiva. He has wasted so much money just for his ego. Kaun dega ye paisa - uska baap!!! kahan se aata hai ye paisa?
Amitabh Bachchan can do one good thing. Stop signing films with ramu.

Re: Movie Review: Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag
I agree that Aag is one of the many stupid movies that are being made ...But i am against u using "After the murder of Devdas and Don" ..Devadas was not that great to the mark , but as with performances it was good ..But the latest Don was much much better ...I really enjoyed the whole movie , with the unpredicted twists and a good different Ending ...
Re: Movie Review: Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag
I agree with gkambasta. devdas and don were equally pathetic remakes. these stupid directors should stay away from the classics. krishna chaitanya, not sure what u liked in don. by any chance do u mean its better than the orignal don? if so then i do not want to argue any further. get a life dude!
rgv ki aag is the worst rgv movie ever. worse than nishabd. but amitabh is god :)
Re: Movie Review: Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag
Good review. good analysis. right on...
Re: Movie Review: Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag
The review is spot on , couldn't have put it better my self. Basically this film should not have been made. At no point in the film it felt like i was watching a remake of sholay. All the scenes were messed up and most parts just dragged. Amitabh's performance was spot on but it always is in my opinion. I still think that the role did not suit him purely cos he looked too old and the limp didn't help either. I think they should doing remakes of AB's films , no actor can replace him!!!
Re: Movie Review: Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag
Honestly,
This movie is good revenge movie. I got free ticket from my cousin. I am going to go crazy when I meet him next time. He took revenge on me, now I will make him see this movie twice, so he will suffer as much as I did.
Jango.

Check this out. It is being pulled out from the theatres. Hopefully RGV will learn his lesson, or perhaps not.

Re: Movie Review: Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag
One thing which you missed out but I felt strongly when I was watching the film:
When a comedy is made in the name of remake of a classic movie, it doesn't feel bad if aliens are behind it. After all, they can not be blamed for making fun of a movie. You can label them as morons. But I did not expect Amitabh Bachchan to be a partner in crime. If I were Amitabh Bachchan, I would have walked out of the movie midway when I'd see the rampant mockery of my own classic movie...or may be Amitabh Bachchan is not aware of the fan following of Sholay. I doubt the latter!
Re: Movie Review: Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag
@ Anshuman -
I agree with you completely. Amitabh should not make a mockery of his own classics.
Re: Movie Review: Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag
I don't know what it is about RGV and Amitabh.....but its about time that Amitabh needs to walk away from the guy.....I mean Sarkar was good, but that doesn't mean that he should act in every crap he narrates to Big B....
Lot of people defend what he does in the name of experimentation and its all good....its his choice, but being such a senior actor you should be able to sniff out a shitty movie.....would be curious to know why he signed this movie
Re: Movie Review: Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag
@ Sunil
I agree with u..
I have never seen amitabh choosing his role judiciously. It is just by accident that good roles come to him sometimes. It was more often earlier... it is less frequent these days... but I am not sure if he ever had the ability to select.
If you did not watch this movie, YOU SAVED MONEY AND TIME
RGV is a FOOL. Amitabh looks like a deadbody. Nisha kothari looks like a used up slut. Fellows, if u did not watch this movie, thank your Gods. You saved your time and money
Re: Movie Review: Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag
I do not agree to the claim by most of you guys that Hindi movies should not be remade. Its a trend that will be common in future. there were times when people (like most of the above reviewers ) thought that sequels will never work in India. We did have sequels made and they did flop. like.. Nigaahen (Nagina part II), there was a Vastaav sequel. But "Lage Raho Munnabhai" shattered that jinx. Even Doom 2 did well. Even remixing of old songs is a growing trend. Somebody has to brush the brains of some people (like most of the above reviewers) which have collected dust sitting in "old-is-gold" cupboards.
Few people came forward, like RGV, Farhan & SL Bansali. Kudos to these guys. These people are setting trends for new concepts. It take guts to do something different. I amazed. People, (who can't shoot a picture with a camera, using timer, mounted on a tripod) have nerves to call RGV (who gave blockbusters like, Shiva, Satya, Company, Rangeela, Sarkar) a fool.
RGV is one of the Best directors that Indian Movie Industry ever produced.
I recommend "Complan" for your immature brains. Grow Up !!
