Movie Review: Cash

After some good work with movies like “Dus” and “Tum Bin”, Director Anubhav Sinha is back with a tale of a diamond heist, “Cash”. The director tries to scorch the screen with adrenaline pumping action cuts, but fails miserably due to a fragile storyline.

The movie revolves around a con artist, Karan aka Doc (Ajay Devgan) who hires a group of hi-tech robbers Pooja (Esha Deol), Danny (Zayed Khan), Lucky (Riteish Deshmukh) and Aditi (Dia Mirza) to take on an indeterminate assignment of stealing a set of diamonds in South Africa. The other two people who are after the diamonds are underworld don Angad (Suniel Shetty) and Shania (Shamita Shetty). The rest of the movie delves on their journey to acquire the diamonds.

Director Anubhav Sinha tries to entice the audiences through the visuals but writers Vinay-Yash fail to create a substantial script. The movie takes too much time for the introduction of characters, who turn into cartoons and becomes quite sluggish at times. First half is nothing but that. The second half, including the climax, is quite fast paced. The animations involved in the movie could have been chopped off, as it looks quite amateurish.

The trailer of the movie gives an impression as if it’s going to be an out-of-the-world kind of a movie but the harsh truth is that for a movie to be a hit among the audiences, it needs to have some collective effort and something commendable. It does not necessarily have to be a film having glamorous girls and bicepped guys trying to flaunt their chiseled looks and giving it the name of “style”.

These days, Bollywood is trying hard to imitate the action sequences involved in Hollywood flicks but are not making more than a mockery out of it. I don’t know when will they realize that heavy-duty action is not their forte. Suspending an actor on cables, using roller blading and scuba diving doesn’t mean that you have done a miracle. You need to show it that way. I guess we have had enough of style. It’s high time now to do something different.

In terms of acting, nothing new is there. After doing some highly acclaimed roles in “Gangaajal” and “Omkara”, Ajay Devgan disappoints a big deal. He is a complete misfit in such roles. Although, he started as an action hero, but now after creating a name for himself in substantial roles, he should avoid doing such films. He has a tremendous potential to go far ahead. I don’t know when Zayed Khan is going to understand that being a cool dude isn’t enough to be an actor. His over-acting is quite visible on screen. Riteish Deshmukh is good. Although he misfits in action but his comic timing and expressions seems to be getting better day by day. Suniel Shetty disappoints big deal. He needs to work a bit on his looks as well. Esha Deol is completely EXPRESSIONLESS (as usual). Shamita Shetty tries to flaunt her abs a lot but has worked on her dialogue delivery. Dia Mirza has been wasted. She is capable of doing much better performances.

Music by Vishal-Shekhar is good. The title track seems to be one of the favorites among the music charts. Even “Mindblowing Mahiya” is quite foot tapping. Choreography is impressive. Editing lacks refinement.

All in all, “Cash” disappoints. We have some better releases this week such as “Gandhi, My Father” and the colorized “Naya Daur”. Spend your cash for something worthy... !!

Re: Movie Review: Cash

CASH is movie on which no one would like to spend their hard earned CASH. The movie is all about hype. If the director ANUBHAV SINHA would have paid the half the attention as he did in DUS, we would have seen a really cool flick. The movie boasts of all the big names in the industry and some of the best eye-candy material of bollywood, but the effort of all these people also, cant help the producers earning some CASH on the box office.
I recommend the people to spend their CASH on GANDHI MY FATHER for this weekend.

Re: Movie Review: Cash

Great review Manas.....I agree....there's way too much posturing and less substance.....even a movie like XXX and fast and furious that was just purely about biceps, blasts, style and girls had much better story than some of these bollywood flicks.....

Re: Movie Review: Cash

Well, I never thought DUS was a cool flick either. It did have good stunts and kewl look but, was very pale at times. From the trailer CASH looked all hype and less detail. Thanks for the review. I will save my cash.
