Movie Review: Shootout at Lokhandwala !!!

Update: Watch Shootout At Lokhandwala here

Director Apoorva Lakhia, with his latest flick “Shootout at Lokhandwala”, tries to put on celluloid a real life incident of the Lokhandwala shootout of 1991. After “Mumbai Se Aaya Mera Dost” and “Ek Ajnabee”, Apoorva Lakhia takes a gritty and complex topic and somewhat excels in making a good movie out of it.

The movie goes deep into the lives of Dawood Ibrahim’s aides Maya Dolas, Dilip Buwa, his sidekick, and their three colleagues. On the other hand, it also shows how difficult it is for the cops to apprehend the dreaded criminals as they have to risk their own lives and have to limit themselves within the power given to them by the law.

ACP Aftab Ahmed Khan (Sanjay Dutt) is the officer-in-charge who gets the responsibility to nab the gangsters Maya Dolas (Viveik Oberoi), Dilip Buwa (Tusshar Kapoor), RC (Shabbir Ahluwalia), Fattu (Rohit Roy) and Doubling (Aditya Lakhia) from a Lokhandwala flat. Khan along with his trusted aides, Kaviraj Patil (Suniel Shetty) and Javed Sheikh (Arbaaz Khan) and other 300 policemen go in for their encounters. It was one of the most talked about encounters lasting 6 hours that denatured suburban Mumbai into a combat zone.

Director Apoorva Lakhia excels in telling the story from the perspective of gangsters as well as the cops. He has used a series of flashbacks.  His treatment & smooth style make this a stimulating and tightly made movie. Moreover, the way he has executed the shootout drama is something to watch out for. The movie reaches its peak the moment the shootout drama starts in the second half.

In the acting department, Sanjay Dutt looks great in his new look sporting moustache and does complete justice to his role by getting completely into the skin of the character. Suniel Shetty and Arbaaz Khan too did justice to their roles. Viveik Oberoi as a fearless and malevolent guy comes out brilliantly. His role contains the shades of “Chandu” (Company) and “Keshu” (Omkara). Tusshar Kapoor is average. His get-up and physical appearance doesn’t suit his role. Sometimes, he just tries too much and that is where he misses that authenticity required for such roles. Amitabh Bachchan as Ex-Chief Justice Dhingra is brilliant and makes his presence felt. Abhishek Bachchan has a small role. Other actors were good too.

As the movie wraps around a sensitive issue, there was no need for the songs as they reduce the impact of the movie. Both Viveik and Tusshar dancing in the bar with Aarti Chhabria (playing Tarannum) looks quite unreal and artificial. That could have been avoided. Although Amrita Singh as “Aai” does a commendable job, there is no scope for the other actresses.

Dialogues by Raj Vasant are acute and perfect. Cinematography by Gururaj S. Jois is brilliant and excels in creating a dark and violent mood. The film’s score and soundtrack is composed by leading Pakistan band “Strings”, Indian bands “Indian Ocean” and “Euphoria”, Biddu Appaiah, Shibani Kashyap and Mika Mehndi.

Although the movie has a lot of bloodshed, violence and extermination, yet, it can be watched atleast once...!!!

Re: Movie Review: Shootout at Lokhandwala !!!

It can be watched atleast once!, Exactly this is what the director had in mind who has made a joke of topics where he could have made a mark for himself. I haven't seen this movie but my friends who went to the movie said they would have left the movie in middle, but because they went in a group they had ball of time laughing at the wise crack they were getting out of mindless direction and host of other areas like screen play, and dialogues. I think people should wait for few months and it would be featured on one of the TV channels.

Re: Movie Review: Shootout at Lokhandwala !!!

The movie has too many technical errors and fails to make any point . What is the synopsis that te director want the public to carry home is not clear . The Maya and gang are a merry lot extorting money and spending it on bargirls . Other than this one single activity they do not seem to have anything else on their mind it seems . The are not into smuggling , dacoity , or any otehr crimes , just killing and extortion . Some blatant technical errors are listed below

Inspector Khan goes into the building to flush out Maya - without bulletproof jacket and with just one revolver , even without any extra ammunition .

A number of policemen are seen to be holding the rifle wrongly. Suddenly the Mumbai police seems to have recruited a number of left handed policemen . Also they are holding the guns so loosely that if the gun were to fire , his shoulder would be the first casualty .

The policemen are carrying outdated 303 rifles but surprisingly though they are showering bullets , nobody seems to be retriveing the catch of the rifle before shooting .

The gangsters who are merely into street killing and extortion are armed with a rocket launcher .

Inspector Khan is trying to wipe out gangsterism or a particular gang is not clear from the picture .

So many policemen get injured and yet keep fighting as if nothing has happened . For example Kaviraj Patil gets shot in the shoulder but not only keeps fighting but also overpowers a gangster in hand to hand combat .

Not even one time has it been shown that the police have been working systematically . Get the information , go to the spot and hit the waiting gangster . Phew .

In act the whole movie can be summarised by just answering the question that the lawyer asks the judge " There is a man standing outside your home with a gun . Who would you prefer him to be .... Maya , Buwa or Khan . " Frankly after seeing the movie I do not know .

Mishraji, did you get money from the movie makers to write this review? Please spare this site from your stupid reviews...some of us visit this site regularly to watch some great content. If you think that Apporva Lakhia exceled in telling the story, then you are surely the biggest pinhead in this world...

and by the way, Mr. Ved Prakash...if you think that this movie can be watched at least once, I have a video of myself on the pot...you can surely watch that as well at least once.

Re: Movie Review: Shootout at Lokhandwala !!!

I think it was a classic movie. In fact, you can be sure that you are watching a master's work when you see that in the end none of the bad guys dies of bullet shots. The encounter then actually is a symbol of their attempt to connect to their families in the time of crisis. It is their encounter with life's reality that a sharp shooter cannot even hit a Jeep using a Rocket propelled grenade.

with some innovative additions to the plot suggested by our friends (which cannot be revealed here), this can very well be our best shot at Oscars this year. Move over Mother India and Lagaan here comes the best movie of all times.

OK. Cut the crap.. This has to be the worst movie I have seen in recent times. I fail to understand how you can give it 3 stars.

If you are fine with watchin sun glass wearing heroes moving around like stud boys, Chyawanprash to Champi oil selling Amitabh Bachchan doing his regular stuff and some senseless dialogues then this is the movie for you.

Re: Movie Review: Shootout at Lokhandwala !!!

Mr. Manas Mishra, this movie is right up there among the worst movies I have ever seen. A complete joke, and yet not enough to be in the league of Loha or Gunda which can be watched once for their humor content. One of the things we hate these days is the fact that most reviews these days are very misleading. The reviewers hardly ever criticize the big stars or the director because they now it would affect future chances of getting interviews etc. from the same stars.

One of the reasons moviewalah has been different and I used to come to this site is because at least this one seems impartial and we can expect to know that a movie is a stinker before we go to watch it. After reading ur review however and going to see the movie yesterday, I have to change my opinion of this site. I hope u will be more impartial and careful in the future. Also, how on earth could u give 3 stars to chashme baddoor and also 3 stars to this piece of shit?

Re: Movie Review: Shootout at Lokhandwala !!!

Re: Movie Review: Shootout at Lokhandwala !!!

Watch roberdinero's+alpacino's HEAT
infi scene's copy kiya hai

LOL

Most of the people criticizing this movie here are idiots...

Guys the film is based on a TRUE incident which happened in 1991! So dont try and connect it to the present times! And its a great movie guys you could go watch it and enjoy the thrill.

It was about showing how powerful Maya Dolas and his gang had become, how brutal and confident they were at the peak of their time when they reached an extent of fearlessness where they HAD to be killed. Its also about the gangsters realising that they were brutally wrong in whatever they did towards the end of the movie.

The film justifies the actions of AA Khan which is very much right as well. Besides a few technical flaws I dont see any other problems with the film, it rules! The songs are very much entertaining, there was no need of them I agree but the soundtrack has been a hit already, and all the producer produces a film for, frankly speaking, is for gaining profit, which is why there is a need for music.

Re: Movie Review: Shootout at Lokhandwala !!!

some of the goofs in this movie , overall a crap movie.
During a Scene Where Sunil Shetty makes a Call to Someone Anonymous from a telephone Booth, A Time Stamp is Shown Dated 1990, Just Then We See a Tata Indigo Passing By, Tata Indigo Was not Launched Till Year 2002.
During a scene where Rakhi Savant gives an interview, a Pepsi 2 liter Pet Bottle is visible, even though Pepsi had not launched its Pet bottles untill late 2001.
The Song "GANPAT" in its second verse has a mention of Bipasha(Bipasha Basu) , Mallika(Mallika Sherawat) & Aishwarya(Aishwarya Rai), all of these actresses joined the industry after 1995 where as the song is supposedly belonging to mid 1991.
The Scene where buva goes to save Tarannum in the shopping store, there's a sony viao poster in the background. vaio was started by sony after 1996.
in reality no rpg was fired by any terrorist, while it was shown in the movie
The builder supposedly calls Dubai from a PCO. Impossible is a very small word for the possibility of a international call being put across from a Public Call Office in India.

and also the scene where buwa hits a guy on the head with his gun has been stolen from , goodfellas and obviously the execution was much better in goodfellas.

Re: Movie Review: Shootout at Lokhandwala !!!

Good movie.. very good technically. it looked real and up there with hollywood standards.
It is not to be watched w/ kids due to the amount of violence and swearing.
But it is very entertaining.
2 songs were unnecessary and slowed down the movie.
I liked the background score, it kept the movie revving at high speed.
The only woman who had a good role was Amrita singh, the other women just purely useless in the movie. The other actors all did well.
THis movie is definitely worth a second watch.
4 out of 5 stars.

Re: Movie Review: Shootout at Lokhandwala !!!
