Update: Watch Cheeni Kum here
Amitabh Bachchan is once again back on the big screen, romancing a heroine far below his age. After being paired opposite Jiah Khan in “Nishabd”, this time AB Sr. as Buddhadev Gupta has eyes only for Nina played by Tabu.
Gupta is an elderly man in his 60’s and lives with his mother (Zohra Sehgal) who is in her 80’s. He is also the owner of one of the fanciest Indian restaurants in London and his only passion in life is cooking, cooking and more cooking. He has remained a bachelor all his life and never intended to fall in love until he comes across this lady called Nina (who is in her 30’s). And now Mr. Gupta has his heart set on marrying this vivacious woman, but with the permission of her father (Paresh Rawal). The father however, if he gives the green signal for this wedding, then his would be son in law is going to be even elder to him. Thus lays the entire story dealing with the question, if age is going to be a barrier between the unions of these two lovebirds or will Mr. Gupta be able to convince his supposed father in law.
Delicate, warming and sensitizing!!!! “Cheeni Kum” comes forth as a sweet romantic comedy with some worth watching performances. While “Nishabd” was grimmer, this one is a lighter and a frothier bet. The movie progresses at a comfortable pace and is outlined with a witticism that pervades throughout the course of the journey.

There is a host of talented actors and everyone seems to be absolutely befitting their part. The characterization of Buddhadev Gupta and Nina is completely contrasting. While he is a pompous egoist, she is more likeable in her being. Yet when they come together, it is the mingling of two people who are so much made for each other, despite the huge age gaps. Even the chemistry between Gupta and his young neighbour, Ms. Sexy (Swini Kara) is incredible, and so is the range of compatibility between Gupta and his mother. What is extremely important is the kind of versatility that the director has reached where the characters are concerned. There is the old mother of Gupta who still yearns to be young and wants to live life as if it has just begun for her, whereas on the other hand there is the young kid, Ms Sexy who is battling death (due to cancer) at this innocent age itself.
The debutant director (R. Balki) has weaved out a lovable blend of storytelling, though the ending could have been a little more constricted… (But hmmmmm…, never mind!!!!)…The music (by Ilaiyaraaja) is also soothing and provides the perfect backdrop for a fable as this. The frames ooze a fresh appeal, with the most prominent color being white which makes it actually more vibrant. Cinematographer P. C Sreeram has accomplished a laudable job.
Overall, a very unsullied and fine-looking piece of cinema…. We certainly need more such as this one is!!!

Re: Movie Review: CHEENI KUM !!!

Re: Movie Review: CHEENI KUM !!!
A COMEDY SIMILIAR TO CHUPKE-CHUPKE(OLD),AGAIN WITH ONE OF THE FINEST ACTOR IN THE WORLD -BIG B ; ITS ONE OF THE BEST MOVIES I HAVE EVER SEEN IN MY LIFE. CONGRATS BALKI-EVERYTHING WAS PUT IN RIGHT PLACE;NO OVER EMOTIONS,NO OVER ACTING & PERFECT COMEDY.
Re: Movie Review: CHEENI KUM !!!
its a very good movie. i think any1 and every1 can watch the movie. goood acting by both big b and tabu. thank god we can understand amitabh bachchan's dialogue in the film
Re: Movie Review: CHEENI KUM !!!
I saw this movie, too, but was very disappointed. It is just another cheap remake of the American (original) movie named Lolita. I mean, what is wrong? India has got the best actors. Why do they always have to copy from other movies?
Guys go and watch Lolita.
Re: Movie Review: CHEENI KUM !!!
Mr Anonymous, I don't think you have seen both the movies else you would not have compared Cheeni Kum with Lolita. Cheeni Kum is a sweet romantic comedy movie. I believe Nishabd was more close to Lolita. Btw, why do we need to compare all May-December kinda romantic movies with Lolita? I hardly see any similarity in Cheeni Kum and Lolita.
I loved the first half of Cheeni Kum. Colgate smile was funny and Sexy too sweet. Amitabh Bachchan and Tabu were awesome - terrific chemistry!
Re: Movie Review: CHEENI KUM !!!
I'm now a Tabu fan!
Undoubtedly an OSCAR nominee in my books
Saw this movie a few hours back... just one word to describe it... WOW !!
I had stopped watching Indian movies because of their stale, meaningless drama (and aweful songs by Reshamiya et.al.) ... but this one revives my interest.
One of the best acting I've seen in a while... beautifully crafted ... I just wish it was more "tightly" edited. - this could easily be made into a 2hr movie.
My hats off to both TABU and AB - simply brilliant performances. Dialog writing and delivery are exceptional.
Re: Movie Review: CHEENI KUM !!!
This movie is made in a light vein. I think, crop of such movie can foster healthy atmostphere in the society because today's trend of movie is bloodshed violence, rape, cheating and erotic dances. This is a very healthy movie
Re: Movie Review: CHEENI KUM !!!
well. very decent indeed. good for a relaxing view. but doesnt really glue u to the screen dat it has to hav such a high rate.
Re: Movie Review: CHEENI KUM !!!
I am not a huge Bollywood fan, but for my life partner I do watch/have to watch some. This movie sweetly kept me awake. What struck me about this movie is its simplicity and the flow. You may have to pardon my limited datapoint about my take on this movie and I am writing this out of my gut.
I think in a world where 'comedy' is primarily restricted to 'slap-stick' this is a welcome change. Well written and well made. Fundametally cinema is about story-telling and you gotta make it simple yet entertaining. I think this movie scores well there. And then its Big B, its amazing how this 60 odd year guy manages to pull through with his pony-tail. Hail Amit ji...as he is known by die-hard fans, many of them happens to be my close friends...Nothing to take away from Tabu and Zora, well chiseled performance. Go and enjoy 'Hyderabaadi Zaafrani Pulao' with some well weaved 'tounge-in-cheek' lines....

Re: Movie Review: CHEENI KUM !!!
ultimate story telling, performance!!!!!!!hats offffffffff to the director
Chinni Kum
The mood of the movie was ruined for its pedophilic innotations. Naming a pre-pubecent girl "sexy", is creepy. Encouraging a child to BEHAVE like she has a sexual relationship with an old man is sickening. Why couldnt she enjoy whats left of her childhood instead of being turned into a "sexy" girl. Its hard enough to fight problems of child abuse, and when popular films start glorifying unhealthy images, it only adds to the problem. The film directors may view it as an innocent and "unusual" relationship, they should however take time to find out how real children are in this world. Imagine their own daughters being allowed to walk half dressed to the park for an icecream in the middle of the night with a neighbour (Amitabh had an overcoat, the little girl was in sleeveless top). Especially if that daughter has a life threatening disease. Imagine their child watching DVDs with their neighbours at all hours of the night instead of resting? These are just examples.
People are likely to say "its only a movie"; yes its only a movie, but it also sends messages to minds of adults and children, we have to speak out when some class of humans are being portrayed in a manner that could prove harmful for them. Every adult who respects the rights of children would question how appropriate it is for a little girl to be SEXY
Re: Movie Review: CHEENI KUM !!!
I've really become a huge fan of this director! WHAT A BRILLIANT MOVIE! can't believe that a bollywood movie could be made so brilliantly! very courageous to take such a bold subject, and has been treated so sensitively, light, and with so many metaphors, cant believe in one stroke the quality of indian cinema has been taken to a different level! all technical aspects, casting, music (brilliant!!), acting were all overwhelmingly mind-blowing!
just hope other aspiring and already so called "established" directors take note and draw inspiration to try to reach the quality levels of this movie, and not to go back to the age old hindi-movie formula.
hope you make many more movies, Mr. Balki! wish this message reaches to you and to all aspiring directors...
Re: Chinni Kum
u shld take it in the context of the movie, and not in isolation...the movie is made in the point of view of amitabh, and some cinematic liberties are quite acceptable, and the character was so witty and funny...
there r far far more violent movies in bollywood that are mentally disturbing to kids, pl criticise those movies and dont give negative comments to such a good quality movie...
Re: Chinni Kum
I saw the movie, and like most of the reviewers loved it. I agree that all the actors have done ann incredible job. The movie is entertaining and asks for your attention throughout. However, I do agree with Spewing regarding the relationship between AB and Sexy. It does seem inappropriate the way Ab and the little girl interact and behave as if they have an adult relationship. It seems innocent enough, but if you think about it, it does feel sick and no parent would encourage this.
Other than the one fault, I would encourage everyone to watch and enjoy the moview. A must watch !!!
Re: Movie Review: CHEENI KUM !!!
i really liked the movie, though i saw it kinda late. The way the story hs been written is highly commendable. I would have also liked it better if they kinda concentrated on "sexy's" charachter. But then again, the whole story wud have been shaken up id done tht way
i dont agree with "spewing". We shudnt be thinking tht way. Infact we shud be considering the fact tht, amitabh was her frend during her time of isolation. True, parent dont encourage things like tht, but in the movie we are looking at a very modern society in london. The kid has been brought up with exposure to the modern world and hence the matureness in her. I really think that the bond between amitabh and sexy was inspring in the movie. Infact its also sad tht she had to pass away at the end.
anyway!!! great work director!! i'l look out for ure next movie!!!
Scintillating music
Fantastic overall performance of Amitabh, Tabu and Balki made Cheeni Kum an interesting movie to watch. The soothing music of Ilaiyaraaja was a treat for ears. While the title score was a pure jazz, the background score at appropriate places was perfect to the T!
Baatein Hawa was a wonderful melody and beautifully picturised by P.C.Sreeram. The whole movie carried very natural lights particularly the cloudy twilights near the restaurants were beautifully picturised.
Good movie.
