Music Review: Cheeni Kum

Cheeni Kum - Love Story with less sugar in it! Or, probably a sugar free romance between a 60+ chef (Amitabh Bachchan) and a 30+ customer (Tabu). Going by the promos, the chemistry between this new pair is simply electrifying. And the recently released music adds to the ever growing excitement around Cheeni Kum, which hits the theaters May 25. The film is directed by debutant R Balakrishnan and music is by maestro Ilaiyaraaja with Sameer penning the lyrics. Interesting combination all over!
Cheeni Kum - Shreya Ghoshal
The title track Cheeni Kum straight away sets the tone of the movie. Shreya Ghoshal sings flawlessly in a well written song. An impressive way to begin the album!
Baatein Hawa - Shreya Ghoshal and Amitabh Bachchan
"Baatein Hawa Hain Saari Ki Saaari" appears twice in the album - Shreya Ghoshal first with and then without Amitabh Bachchan. Sung beautifully by Shreya Ghoshal, the song takes you through a journey of a not-so-young Tabu's crush over not-so-old Amitabh Bachchan. The song reminds me of the one ("Tune Kabhi Pyar Nahin Kiya...") from Ajooba where Rishi Kapoor teases Amitabh. Here, Tabu takes that over. In between, in his baritone voice, Amitabh Bachchan makes expert comments, which suit the sarcasm, the coldness, the warmth and a certain kind of humor on how to impress or rather how not to impress your sweetheart. I agree to most of his comments though.
Jaane Do Na - Shreya Ghoshal
This is the only song in the album which did not impress me much - partly because already heard too much of Shreya Ghoshal in the previous tracks and partly because there is nothing extraordinary about it. Nevertheless, it does look good on screen with fine performances from Amitabh and Tabu.
Sooni Sooni - Vijay Prakash
Begins like the male version of the title track, Sooni Sooni soon makes its own identity. One of the best songs of the album, I have been hearing it again and again. First you would think this is sung by Amitabh himself, but actually it's not. Vijay Prakash gives a very soulful rendition, which Sudesh Bhosle could not in his numerous attempts as voice of Big B. He sounds somewhere in between Amitabh and Bhupinder Singh. Very impressive! And also this song has that R D Burman touch. Ilaiyaraaja makes somewhat similar usage of instrument here. Can't wait to watch this on screen. Ok, the song does end like the male version of the title track!
Theme Melody and Saxophone Melody
Towards the end of the album there are two instrumental numbers. First, Theme Melody and then Saxophone Melody. It did not strike me earlier, but after listening to Theme Melody, I recollected where I heard it before - well, not exactly but it does sound similar to "Look Chhup Look Chhup Jaao Na..." from Amitabh's Do Anjaane. Hear both and tell me if I am the only one who thinks that. The second track is too good. I hope Amitabh plays that saxophone to woo Tabu and does something similar or even better than what he did in "Bandaa Ye Bindaas" in Aks. Mr Director, are you reading this?
Overall I liked this album - very honest to the theme of the movie. It does not have any dull moment. Sooni Sooni, Cheeni Kum and Baatein Hawa will make you push the replay button more than once. And then again and again. Sweet music in a sugar-free romantic movie! Enjoy the trailer below for now.

Re: Music Review: Cheeni Kum
awesome, sweet and melodious tunes from Raja, are goin to remain forever in millions of hearts.. - Kumar
Re: Music Review: Cheeni Kum
I absolutely loved this soundtrack. I'd not heard Ilaiyaraja before - I am sadly completely ignorant of southern films and I hadn't encountered his handful of Hindi soundtracks - but listening to *Cheeni kum* made me run out and listen to some of his other work. *Cheeni kum* is so wonderfully melodic; the rhythms are playful and the orchestration both crisp and cinematic. I love it!
Re: Music Review: Cheeni Kum
I was only praying that all North Indians should be knowing about the strength of South Indian talents like Ilayaraja. Finally it happened. Similarly, there are lot of things from North that the South should appreciate and adapt. Hope, the new world will be a one like that.
BTW, you know all these CHEENI KUM music tracks are 20 years old tamil film music tracks of Ilayaraja ? We have been enjoying these tracks since 1984.
Cheers... Guruprasad D
Re: Music Review: Cheeni Kum
Though the songs sound great and fresh in this new packaging, Raja shouldn't have recycled his old tunes on request of Balki

Re: Music Review: Cheeni Kum
Wonderful music! Though all the songs including most of the theme music and Sax bit were adaptations of Illayaraja's great tamil hits from the early 80's, they still sound very fresh! Definitely honey to the ears of Hindi audience who have been left at the mercy of uni-tones like Himesh for a long time now! Great work Maestro!!!
Re: Music Review: Cheeni Kum
Lovely music, agreed, but all of them are recycled tunes from Ilayraja's earlier soundtracks. Why use the same tunes over and over again? Jaane do na is a lovely song, but is just a dubbed version of an earlier superhit 'Jotheyali jothe jotheyali', a kannada song which probably has a tamil version too.
I personally was quite disappointed that Ilayraja did not bring anything new to the album but presented all of his old wine in a new bottle. The bottom line is that the album rocks and is very melodious but, for as much a talented music director he is, he could have created some new music, which would have been equally appreciated.
My 2 cents.
Re: Music Review: Cheeni Kum
The music of CK is actually old wine in new wineskins. They are from Mella Thiranthathu Kathavu, Mauna Raagam, and the sax sounds to my ears like 'en iniya pon nilave'. In this sense, I was disappointed with the Maestro. However, the old numbers are reorchestrated in a deliciously and refreshingly new way. This may also be because in IR's mind the situation in the CK is much the same as the scenes in Mella Thiranthathu Kathavu and Mauna Raagam, etc.; the only difference is the location: London. So the reorchestration is justifiable. I have personally listened to CK album several times. I can still listen several more times. This is perhaps the IR magic.
Re: Music Review: Cheeni Kum
ILLAYARAJA HAS ALREADY PROVED HIS TALENT IN SOUTHERN INDIA. NOW HE HAS PROVED BY CHEENI KUM, SIVA 2006 IN BOLLYWOOD ALSO. WHAT A FANTASTIC WORK IN CHEENI KUM. I LIKE ILLAYARAJA MUSIC.
