Music review: Hattrick

Hattrick
is a movie about, Kunal Kapoor, Rimi Sen, Paresh Rawal, Nana Patekar, Danny Denzongpa and how their lives are wound around Cricket and world cup. Pritam scores a 100, though the movie did not exactly hit a sixer with the audience. The movie may have been mildly entertaining but Pritam's smart mix of techno, rock rhythms into desi tunes make the album a breezy listening. The songs truly bring out the spirit and enthusiasm from the heart. I have not seen the movie and probably that is a good thing, my review will purely be from the ear as opposed to a biased one, if done after seeing the visual.

Here is the score.

Ek pal mein
A vibrant song by Kay Kay, rendering the thought to live large right in the moment. This does not really feel like a new composition and sounds similar to Pritam's earlier songs. It is enjoyable however.

Rabba khair kare
Remember 'Tauba mein pyar karke' from 'Pyar ke side effects'? Labh Janjua and Pritam bring the same effect to this song. Same singer, same composer, same beats, same concept for the song (beaten lover in a good/bad way). Still good, definetely good. The reprise of this song by Gulzar is good too. I prefer Labh Janjua. Oh sure! dhanak dhanak dhanna!! And then, there is a remix version, good dance track, best of the three versions.

Wicket bacha
Ooh la la! 'Wish we had so much spirit in our play' that is what you might think while listening to this song. Sung by Usha Uthup and rapped in by Earl. Considering how we were shoved off current world cup, shouting 'India' (dil se) is probably not what we want to do right now but, this is an instant favorite, a great commercial material. Just when I thought Usha Uthup disappeared from the bollywood scene, she storms in. Her recent performance was in the acting zone, in a 2006 hit malayalam movie 'Pothan Vava'. The club mix by Bunty Rajput and EMU is pretty foot tapping. Fine fusion with 'Feeling Hot Hot' theme.

Kahan kho gaya
Pritam's backyard composition, a perfect road song, sung by Soham Chakraborty. Nice work with the gear (orchestra). Soham brings in fresh voice and this could be a ground breaking song for our next Indian Idol season, along with the next one tweaked a little to send them home. What do you think? The remix version is with more punch in the gear zone.

I am coming home
Very smooth on the ears, a little too smooth may be. Brought back the memory of 'Kaisi hai yeh rut' from Dil Chahta Hai. Lovely homecoming song by Roop Kumar Rathod. Caralisa Monteiro presents the english lyrics, which by the way, were not necessary. The reprise version sung by Rana Mazumdar is good too, although Roop Kumar's vocals sound stronger. Let's campaign it to send our Idol contestants home.

Jab chhaye mera
A pale remix of the classic 'Jab chhaye mera jadoo' from Lootmaar, originally sung by Asha Bhonsle. Mahalakhmi Iyer's subdued vocals, for this otherwise well mixed song, do not really do any justice. If you have read my earlier music reviews, you would know that I store quite some criticism towards remixes of old classics.

The album is worth owning and you might agree if, you have not see the movie. I am not tempted to see the movie anyway, owing to the bleak ratings it scored from you moviewalahs. So, I guess my ***1/2 stars rating will hold good for now.

On Jab chhaye I kinda disagree ....its not that bad....I like it.... I think this one is more on the lines of that Don (new one) song.....Aaj Ki Raat

Re: Music review: Hattrick

lol. I liked Aaj ki raat, it is a great song. I play it almost at every gig. Choices by the ear, ey?

Re: Music review: Hattrick
