Music Review: Delhii Heights

Delhii Heights, whose music was launched back in January, is a contemporary soft rock sufi coated album. One of our users has already posted the First Look, check it out. The album is composed by Rabbi Shergill, one of my favorite Punjabi singers/Composers. His 'Bulla Ki Jaana' from the album Rabbi was on the top of the charts way back in 2005.

Sufi style is making its way through bollywood cinema more than ever, with AR Rahman, Himesh Reshammiya (Forgive me for using Himesh in the same sentence with the talented AR Rahman) and the likes, favoring sufi-folk style of music, in their compositions. I have always liked Indian Pop music, as it takes me away from the routine compositions of Bollywood. Delhii Heights definitely sounds POP!

Here is what the album has in store for your sentimental chords.

Dilli - Rabbi Shergill has his academic roots in Delhi. So, when he sings his ode to Delhi, he comes out just as natural. A stylish rock tune, with all its mention on the architectural beauty, fast paced life,  lovable people, is a great track. Reminds me of the several home praising songs like Sweet Home Alabama, Amchi Mumbai, God bless America and the likes. His usage of the instruments to produce sensitive sounds, where the song keeps its rock status and yet, does not sound like noise, is just awesome.
Mein tha, tu thi, aur thi Dilli Bas!

Tere Bin - Not much is needed to be said about this track. This is a very popular track from his earlier album Rabbi. Sung in Punjabi completely, this is one of the romantic tracks. He is famous for his sentimental lyrics and pride towards Punjabi language.

Kabhi ana na - Total Hard Rock!!! That is what comes to my mind. With bhangra and rock fusioned amidst peppy lyrics on our religion(cricket), celebration, this is a young and energetic song. Amit Sana (Second runner of Indian Idol 2005) and Rabbi Shergill share the vocals on this track.

Kitni Der Tak - Okay, by now, I have had a little too much of the same style. Although there is a change in the voice (this is sung by Sonu Nigam), it did sound a little monotonous to me. By now, I started feeling the 'Rabbi' flavor, heavily breathing on me. A mediocre track about dating, waiting for your date, the itsy-bitsy quarrels, so on so forth. Sonu Nigam is as melodious as always in this accented Punjabi lyrical.

Aaja Nachle - Just when I complained of Shergill monotony, there comes this track. A true bhangra track on wedding, calls out for Shagna da celebrations. Qawwali tidbits are thrown into the music. A short track in the album, with lyrics in Punjabi and is sung by Salim Shehzada. Sajna ji wari wari from Honey Moon Travels Ltd hit my dancing bones better than this track.

Ey Gori (Holi) - Back to the bollywood ishtyle. Sung by Sonu Kakkar and Kailash Kher who steered to success with the song "Tauba Tauba" from his Album Kailasha. Strictly an 'OK' track, not really foot tapping. We have had plenty of memorable Holi tracks in the past, this does not make that impression.

Footnote: I loved the album 'Rabbi' by Rabbi Shergill so, I am going to be a little biased about this one as well. However, considering the mainstream bollywood music, this might fall a bit too short, unless the movie proves to be a winner. There aren't many movies whose music fails and yet the movie was a killer. This might just be in that unlucky lot. Besides, majority of the songs are penned in Punjabi, which is another drawback. Tere Bin is probably the only track that might stay with you, which is not even the original composition for this album.

Jimmy Shergill and Neha Shergill oops Dhupia, star in this Shergill powered movie! Did I say Shergill too many times already?

My *** stars for the album

I just heard the song Main Tha, Tu thi, aur thi Dilli Bas. What guitar riff!! True markings of a classic track! The song gave me goosebumps. I'm gonna buy the CD today itself! I hope the movie catches the ethos of the city as much as the song did. You gotta love that classis soft rock guitar work man. work of a true genius. just try and get it out of your head!

Re: Music Review: Delhii Heights

haven't heard the music yet. but now would.

Music Review: Delhii Heights

So I did buy the album and man am I happy! :) There are two really fabulous new tracks by Rabbi - Dilli and Kabhi Ana Na. Dilli is a true theme song for this city. Captures the attitude without becoming too mushy. And thank you Rabbi for giving such great theme music. The guitar work is truly magnificent! The album comes with all lyrics and their english translation. Kabhi Ana Na is a very funny song with good electric guitar work. Quite hummable. Would look great in the movie actually. Kitni Der Tak is made in the country music genre. I must admit that Rabbi is an adept chap. In Ey Gori, Kailash Kher sings the song as if he's the character himself! You can feel that the song was written for him! Great job. Rabbi is a guitar master so as soon as the folksy sounding music begins and you begin to think that this sounds boring, Rabbi interjects with his guitar and completely lifts the mood. Magic! :)
Four Stars for a great album!
