Winning Trends
- An overwhelming majority of Best Actress awards have been given away for dramatic love stories. Only rarely have actresses won the top honor for roles where they do not play the romantic lead, the "other woman" or the dedicated wife. The exceptions are Nargis for Mother India, Karishma Kapoor for Fiza, and Rani Mukherjee for Black. And to a somwhat lesser degree Nutan for Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki and Rakhee for Tapasya.
- As with Best Actor awards, comedy is the most ignored genre. Only four actresses have ever won the Best Actress award for comic/partially comic roles. Hema Malini (Seeta Aur Geeta), Rekha (Khubsoorat), Sridevi (ChalBaaz) and Juhi Chawla (Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke).
- Only three actresses have won back to back Filmfares. Meena Kumari (1954, 1955), Jaya Bhaduri (1974, 1975) and Rani Mukherjee (2005, 2006).
Interesting Facts and Other Oddities
- The only tie ever for the Best Actress award happenend in 1974 when Jaya Bhaduri and Dimple Kapadia shared the honor for their performances in Abhimaan and Bobby respectively.
- Only two acresses have ever won the Best Actress award for their debut performances - Dimple Kapadia for Bobby and Laxmi for Julie.
- Longest time lapse between first and last win - 22 years. Nutan won her first award in 1957 for Seema and her last in 1979 for Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki.
- Technically many actresses (like Waheeda Rehman, Shabana Azmi, Jaya Bhaduri, Rekha) have a chance to take over this record, but practically speaking this record is here to stay. Most of these actresses work only sporadically and the Indian film industry still does not make movies around middle aged or old women.
- Oldest Best Actor Winner - Nutan was 43 years old when she won her trophy for Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki in 1979.
- Youngest Best Actor Winner - Dimple Kapadia was barely 16 years old when she won the top award for Bobby in 1974.
