Dreaming of future fame and fortune, poverty-stricken local boys Sanjay (Aamir Khan) and Ratan (Mamik) have different perspectives on how to achieve success in the college town of Dehradun. Hardworking and dedicated, cycling championship hopeful Ratan places all his energy in achieving victory, but Sanjay only cares about dating the wealthy Devika (Pooja Bedi). But after Ratan is injured, Sanjay must rise to the occasion to save his friendship.
