Is RottenTomatoes.com trying to sabotage "The Happening"
I am not someone who believes in conspiracy theories, but this one seems too interesting to be left alone. In the spirit of full disclosure, before I say anything I must say, I am a big Shayamalan fan (yeah I liked Lady In the Water). Now if you go on the page for "The Happening" on RottenTomatoes.com, you'll see a rating of 17%. You start reading the reviews and obviously they are all negative, even the positive ones sound pretty negative. However an investigative Shyamalan fan (desitexan) has listed 12 reviews from notable critics and publications in the forums for that movie, which, have not been accounted by RT.com in their average rating calculation. I mean Roger Ebert gave it a great rating, he knows a few things about being a movie critic right?
Now why would they do it you might ask? Well my theory is because Shyamalan made so much fun of critics in " The Lady in the Water" that they've been hating on him ever since. I mean they've been bitching about him and his movies on the blogs since that movie came out. But what better way to take the revenge but by killing the opening of his new movie. So they use RT.com as a vehicle (the site that basically survives because of content from other critics) and all RT.com has to do is conveniently ignore most of the positive reviews. Thus bringing the average lower and therefore most people who rely on RT.com's rating will turn away and go watch Incredible Hulk. Which coincidently is the other big movie with a hugely positive rating.
I rest my case.....

No, there's no conspiracy about it, it's just a bad film all around. I just saw the film with my wife, and 17% is more than it deserves.
Now, it's not as bad as Lady in the Water (how you or anyone can like that movie is beyond me) but it's pretty bad. Wahlberg's acting isn't as bad as everyone's saying, but his role is. So is the plot. And the dialogue. And then so is the ending.
I'm an M. Night fan too, or at least I was. I loved the first three for sure, and the Village was okay despite a lame ending. I could overlook Lady as one hideous film made by someone trying to experiment, and this one looked like it had hope.
Anyway, I was just reading about how the script was rejected and so on several times by the studios, so it's not as if some critics started all the negative press. I think you ought to see this film for yourself, and then it will be a little more clear.

That was an interesting news from Aslam and i agree with it. I just don't understand what is it that these so called critics have a problme with Night. I mean they say he is gone downhill after the sixth sense but according to me and many of his fans it his movies after the sixth sense which many of us love it. And i think his best was The Village and Unbreakable. I also watched The Happening last night and enjoyed it. Looks like no matter what Night comes up with these critics and mindless people will just blah-blah about him. And that is unfortunate.

"The Happening" is a brilliant movie. I am not a die hard Shyamalan fan; I didn't like "Signs" but I loved "The Village." There is nothing not to like about "The Happening." I just saw it and I agree with Ebert -- it's touching and thoughtful. http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080612/REVIE...
I don't easily buy into conspiracy theories, however; the bad reviews probably just reflect confusion. See, most movies easily fit into one category or another. Indiana Jones and the Incredible Hulk will not surprise you. "The Happening," like Shyamalan's other films, tries to look at something familiar from a unique perspective. Remember "Unbreakable"? That was Shyamalan's unique perspective on comic book culture and superheroes. "Lady in the Water" looked at fairy tales. "Signs" looked at aliens. And so on. Shyamalan does for films what Alan Moore did for comics with "Watchmen."
"The Happening" is his unique perspective on the theme of apocalypse. It's quiet, sensitive, personal -- but apocalyptic. No big cgi. No flash floods sweeping through Manhattan. No monsters climbing the Empire State Building. Just a few people out in a field, wondering what in the world is going on.
Understanding and appreciating Shyamalan requires the ability to recognize the categories you take for granted and break them open. Shyamalan is not about the twist, and never has been; that was just the hook to get you to watch.

Wow Angiras its creepy how much we think alike
Re: Is RottenTomatoes.com trying to sabotage "The Happening"
I saw the movie yesterday and I agree with Angiras' take on it.....I liked the fact that Shyamalan was true to his style and his fans would like the effort. It's a little less gripping than Signs or even Irreversible.....not sure if it was because of the script or the actors, but the bad reviews that this movie has been getting are quite unfair.....considering that the same reviewers will turn around and give a great rating to some totally retarded movie because it wasn't a Shyamalan movie.....
Re: Is RottenTomatoes.com trying to sabotage "The Happening"
In a time when so many people judge a movie by how many things blow up or what had the biggest budget for the best CGI, they seem to lose sight of what makes a truly good film. Shyamalan doesn't rely on action sequences or big budget special effects to relay a good story, he has a truly unique style that causes the viewer to actually think. I know that being stupid and watching things blow up is fun on occasion, but films like that generally don't carry any meaning and really don't have to try to captivate the audience. Shymalan's films are brilliant and unique, and that is why so many people try to give him a bad rep. There is a formula, you have to make a "cool" movie in order for it to be good and I find this terribly stupid. Shyamalan is an incredible filmmaker and The Happening was an incredible film. He shall always have my respect.

I haven't seen this movie but I think its a good one. I love Mark Wahlberg, he's a good actor. I don't care if rottentomatoes.com is sabotaging the movie. It's just a publicity stunt to attract readers.
