2007: Hits and Flops - Box Office Analysis

The year, which started good with Abhishek Bachchan's terrific performance in Guru, is ending on a positive note too with two successes - Aamir Khan's Taare Zameen Par and Welcome! While 2007 is no match to 2006, it still is not that bad either. We got to see some experiments - some worked while others bombed. On one hand Bheja Fry, The Namesake, Life in a Metro and SRK's Chak De India worked both critically and commercially but on the other hand No Smoking, Black Friday, Gandhi My Father, Nishabd, Johnny Gaddaar, Blue Umbrella, 1971 and Manorama Six Feet Under did not find many takers in the audience. Agreed, some of these were bad cinema but at least Bollywood is no more tied within the usual commercial limitations. That's a healthy sign!

It won't be wrong to say that 2007 belongs to Akshay Kumar, who gave us 4 hits - Welcome, Heyy Babyy, Bhool Bhulaiyaa and Namastey London. He has certainly been one of the most consistent stars over the years and this was his best year so far. King Khan is not far behind with Om Shanti Om and Chak De India proving yet again that he is still No. 1 with both masses and classes. Talking of masses, how can David Dhawan be far behind? He gave one of the biggest hits of his career in Partner, although it was a bad rip-off of Hitch. In Partner, Salman Khan and Govinda did what they could not do with four other stars in Salaam-E-Ishq.

Abhishek Bachchan had a mixed year. He showed with Guru what a good director can do with him. In his most accomplished performance so far, he also gave his first hit with Ash. However Jhoom Barabar Jhoom, his second movie with Shaad Ali, turned out to be a damb squib although its music still tops the charts. And his extended guest apperance could not save Laaga Chunari Mein Daag. That brings me to Yash Raj Films, who had their worst ever year. All their movies, barring Chak De, flopped. Ta Ra Rum Pum, Jhoom Barabar Jhoom, Laaga Chunari Mein Daag and even Madhuri's comeback vehicle Aaja Nachle - all disappointed.

Hrithik Roshan did not have a single release after fantastic 2006 and we will have to wait until Feb 2008 to watch Jodha Akbar.

Amitabh Bachchan gave great performances but except Cheeni Kum, none of them brought box office on aag. I should not even be mentioning about RGV ki whatever but Eklavya and Nishabd did have Amit ji showing us why he is still around and that too at the top.

Jab We Met, Apne, Dhamaal, Shoot Out At Lokhandwala and Aap Ka Surroor - The Moviee were the other hits of 2007.

Among the other major flops, Saawariya ranks as the worst disaster. Its lead stars, however, got good response and with the continued support from their families I am sure they will survive just as some of the other star kids have. At least Ranbir Kapoor will. While Naqaab did not look like an Abbas Mustan movie at all Fool N Final, Cash, Awarapan, Dus Kahaniyaan, Shakalaka Boom Boom, Khoya Khoya Chand, Good Boy Bad Boy, Hattrick, Just Married, Kya Love Story Hai, Darling and The Train never really took off.

Re: 2007: Hits and Flops - Box Office Analysis

Its really sad n depressing to see movies like "Parzania", "Saawariya", "Manorama Six Feet Under" n "Blue Umbrella" under the flop category... all of dem were well made... but I think Indian audiences needs 2 grow up nw n should be exposed to different n experimental type of cinema... just goin by d fan following n nt d substance, has become a routinary affair 4 d majority of Indian audiences (for eg, OSO, Partner, Apne n Aap ka Suroor)... dey shud understand d meaning n aim of making films... Manorama six feet under depicted the style of film noir, Saawariya was adapted from White Nights, Parzania ws weaved around d Godhra tragedy... Moreover, dey had an aesthetic sense dat only a movie literate can understand... its time now dat such movies should be encouraged n appreciated... dat nt only will increase d confidence of the maker but will inspire the maker to make more good films in the future...

Re: 2007: Hits and Flops - Box Office Analysis

it really hurt me to see that movies like dil dosti etc, Johnny Gaddaar, water, manorama 6 feet under was put under flop list but oh well that list was according to how they fared at the box office. but it was a good movie, i really enjoyed them.

Re: 2007: Hits and Flops - Box Office Analysis

seeing films like water in the flop category which happens to be the biggest overseas groser(hindi movie)is truly dissapointing.aaja nachle despite being liked by many was thrashed by the critics......i feel really bad 4 madhuri she really gave the movie a new dimension.its equally agonising 2 c such senseless movies like hey baby, oso, aap ka suroor, welcome, bhool bhulaiyaa in the hit list.movies r really meant to b tagged with the success tag based on jus the box office number????doesnt the story and the acting play any role??

Re: 2007: Hits and Flops - Box Office Analysis

You have given good review and I also think like you only. OSO is a biggest flop because story is nothing but simply a masala movie. Saawariya is much better than OSO. AAJA NACHLE is flop not only by critics but also by controversy. I think AAJA NACHLE is SUPERHIT.

Re: 2007: Hits and Flops - Box Office Analysis

i also think that aja nachle is super duper hit movie. People are so insane and there minds full of vulgarity. They need the whole body showing actresses to make a movie hit. might as well watch a porn movie.
i hate criticisms about good actress like madhuri. The movie was worth for its content.

Re: 2007: Hits and Flops - Box Office Analysis

even madhuri dixit rose to stardom by "ang-pradarshan" (as u said whole body showing) so what's wrong there dude? as for aaja nachle, no comments as i have not seen it yet.

Re: 2007: Hits and Flops - Box Office Analysis

Several movies have been overshadowed in 2007, and those movies contained much positivity, realistic-ness...and well, everything a GOOD movie should offer. AWARAPAN, was extremely underrated, the execution of the performances, the depths of emotions, and the acts of humanity had much superiority compared to idiotic movies such as Aap ka surroor...I just sigh when I see grandeur, creative movies overlooked. Bollywood viewers have this awkward tendency to dismiss realistic movies and settle for the ones with all these unrealistic occurences. When will people learnnnnn.
