What do you think of Om Shanti Om and Saawariya?

Om Shanti Om and Saawariya, both opened grand with tremendous hype and hoopla. While one got rave reviews (wonder how all critics are in sync....hmmm...), the other was torn apart unanimously. But as a true movie buff I really don't care much about the critics. What matters more is how much the audience liked it. So, take a moment and share with us what you think of this year's Diwali releases. Write your movie review as comments below and rate Om Shanti Om and Saawariya...

Re: What do you think of Om Shanti Om and Saawariya?

Both movies released in NY the same day as India....seen em both...
Okie, so Om Shanti Om was meant to be a satire on Bollywood but somewhere down the line the director seems to loose track of what she wants the movie to be...a satire or a movie in itself?...I like SRK but this movie didn't seem like from someone who gave such an applaudable performance in Chak De.

On the other hand, we loved Saawariya...there's something about the movie thats so tasteful- music, sets, costumes and above all the newcomers...especially Ranbir Kapoor. The storyline is a little lukewarm but these factors very much makeup for it.

Re: What do you think of Om Shanti Om and Saawariya?

ive watched om shanti om and i reallly dont know it is a 'blockbuster' film! i lost interest within the first hour but wtched it all anyhow...the new girl didnt get much scope other thn look pretty, arjun rampal is better in this film than some of his previous work, srk did nothing different and wat was it with the todays om??? do ppl/stars in india talk like that? many of srk's character's seem the same to this one....kiron kher was good as was shreyas talpade

i havent seen saawariya yet altho it was the one i wanted to wtch first...but anyhow im hoping for a better outcome and more paisa vasooli from it

Re: What do you think of Om Shanti Om and Saawariya?

Deemed as the year’s most awaited film, packaged with the best marketing gimmicks, tie up with big brand, promotions on every reality show on air. The producers ran pillar to post to ensure that aam janta gave it a tick, and that they did.

With this film, Farah proves that she isn’t a one hit wonder. She’s here to stay and entertain us with her brand of cinema. The movie is based on reincarnation and heavily inspired by Ghai’s Karz. This should hardly comes as a surprise, when remakes and direct lifts of scripts are a flavor of the season.
The movie is as filmy as it can get right from the word go. Farah recreates the 70’s in a way one hasn’t witnessed before .You can’t help but fall in love with everything on screen. Be it the colorful and bright costumes, the hair do, the Cadillac’s. The whole set up is mesmerizing. But what impresses you the most is her attention to detail. And by detail I don’t mean spending lakhs on getting a moustache made or spending an atrocious amount on the right sound effect or costumes. She goes beyond this frivolous show of creative ingenuity.

She handles the tricky subject with ease. Every aspect of the movie is well synchronized . Screenplay by Farah and Mushtaq keeps you glued to the screen, cinematographer V. Manikanandan makes every frame look seductive and enticing; sets by Sabu Cyril and back ground score by sandeep chowta are top notch. Dialogues by Mayur Puri are witty and for once the pun is well intended.

Like all SRK movies, this one boasts of some great music, thanks to Vishal and Shekhar . Also the placement of songs is in sync with the plot and takes the story forward. “Dard e Disco” is likely to attain an anthem status with the masses; “ajab si” and “jag soona soona” are soul full. If the special effects and over all representation of 70’s varied dance style in Dhoom Tana nana are unadulterated eye candy then Deewangi Deewangi on the other hand is like a slide show of the biggest names in bollywood.

The movie not only boasts of some excellent technicians but some great performances as well.

Deepika Padukone makes her presence felt in her very first one . She has it all. The looks, the height , a million $ smile , the works . But above all , the girl’s got talent. Not just a prawn If I may say so. She has as uncanny resemblance to Ash, particularly in two frames . She looks ravishing, and appears confident. My advice to Miss Padukone would be to empty some shelves in her study in order to house a fair few best debutant trophies she’ll be taking home this yr.

Kiron kher plays over the top , melodramatic Ma with ease. Shreyas is like a bottle of red, keeps getting better with time. Even as a badie, Arjun Rampal makes you drool . He looks sensational in the first half and ages with grace in the second . performances wise 9/10

As for the Shah Ruk , what can I say , every time he’s written him off , he strikes back with vengeance . First Chak De and now this. He ‘s so confident and comfortable in his own skin that he can laugh at himself both off and on screen .You cant help but fall for him each time . His performance stands out but I guess that’s coz the character of Om and then Ok are so close to his own . An struggling T.V star who dreams of ruling over Mumbai and millions and he does .
He’s often criticized for not experimenting with his characters . Playing the same old Raj , Rahul , Aman and Veer over and over again . But then why try and be a Jack of all when u can be a master of one . You truly deserve to be the undisputed Baadshah, Mr. Khan .. your performance is flawless ……………………

But the movie has its share of flaws .. not too many though .

Editing could have been a little more crispy. The second half feels a bit lengthy and some where the plot gets a little predictable. The song Dastaan-E-Om Shanti Om' sounds and looks like a lost twin of ‘Ek haseena thi’ from Karz. But all this gets unnoticed in the bigger scheme of things .

To sum it , Please watch it .

Meri kahani ab yahi khatam hoti hai , but is picture ka hit hona abhi baki hai mere dost .

Rascala , Mind it 

Re: What do you think of Om Shanti Om and Saawariya?

Great review Champ......your enthusiasm for the movie says it all.....I wish all critics could write with that passion.....but most of them have this smugness about them as if they've been making movies forever.....

I have not seen OSO but will probably this weekend.....I have to agree on Farah Khan, she's really talented and a good choreographer can always be a good director, because choreography is kind of like direction and especially in India where most movies are set like musicals.....for this reason I absolutely loved the movie Jaan-e-man though directed by her husband....but you could easily tell her influence on the movie....even there the story was pretty standard but the presentation was awesome.....

don't think I'm too excited about Saawariya would probably wait for it to watch on DVD......I've had enough of teenage romance stories I guess

Re: What do you think of Om Shanti Om and Saawariya?

Well Mr. Champ, have you been paid by SRK/Farah Khan for writing such a review.
I did watch OSO as well as Saawariya this weekend. OSO is just a below average SRK file. I am sure its gonna be a blockbuster just coz of SRK. But in terms of quality of entertainment, Main Hoon Naa was much better than OSO. Movie is funny at times in the first half, but it keeps on dragging at times. Some of the songs seem like being forced. Deepika Padukone should better leave bollywood and better stay into modelling.
As far as Saawariya goes, its not a great entertainer, but it has really grand sets. Despite having a loose story, SLB has made quite a decent movie. Sonam Kapoor is way better compared to Deepika.
I would say OSO iis gonna be a big hit just in the name of SRK, but its no where close to other SRK movies.

Re: What do you think of Om Shanti Om and Saawariya?

Did not like OSO at all...Bollywood and SRK please make a different movie..please............

Saawariya havent seen but eagerly waiting...

Re: What do you think of Om Shanti Om and Saawariya?

Yet to watch Saawariya, but I have seen Om Shanti Om, and this is what I think..
As much as Om Shanti Om is hyped, in media. It doesn't lives upto expectations... Well at least to mine.

To be honest, OSO started quite well. Reviving the 70s era of Indian cinema was quite entertaining and very creatively presented. I must say it made me feel that its going to be a great movie, but despite creativeness and some very well choreographed songs, I must say the 'Reincarnation' idea was not very well presented. Agreed, that the idea in the first place seemed very 'far-fetched', but then a good director can make a lame or that far-fetched idea flow well with the movie, which Farah Khan fails to do so. When compared to her previous work (Main Hoon Na), it is sad that she has not done a great job in story and plot development. However Arjun Rampal does a great job performing in his negative role, Shreyas Talpade did a good supporting actor role, not impressive but good enough, Shahrukh Khan pulls off a near or slightly above average performance (mainly due to some solid acting in some emotional scenes), while the new actress, Deepika Padukone, starts off her career in mediocre acting, but much can be expected out of her in future.

This movie, If I'm to conclude, was pure 'Masala' (for those who would just love to watch this move for the sake of cheesy and attention seeking songs with loads of guest appearances by celebrities and spiced-up special appearances). Otherwise, as one of the OSO trailers boldly says "Most entertaining Drama of the year", ironically it isn't.

Re: What do you think of Om Shanti Om and Saawariya?

Saawariya is anything but a teenage romance story. You have to watch it in theater. I normally don't watch Hindi movies since they are same story over and over and over. I made exception for this one because it was a SLB movie. It was worth the $9.50 ticket. By the way, Movie is based on "White Nights"....which I think is a great story and SLB did justice to it.

Re: What do you think of Om Shanti Om and Saawariya?

i watched both movies i didnt like either pf them OSO is a very silly movie all rediculous stuff srk looked very old & deepika didint hav much role only she was again lookin like a model shreys arjun were better in the film on the other hand saawariya was very boring i couldnt digest the film but ranbir acted very well and soonam was lookin like a goddess though she didnt hav tough role but who stole the show was rani her english and the number chain chabeela was awsome all the songs are beautifully choreographed.

Re: What do you think of Om Shanti Om and Saawariya?

OSO tried its level best to woo the "movie illiterates" of dis country and so far succeeded also.. It's really sad on the part of certain Indian audiences that they r supporting and encouraging such trashy flicks... Although we get to see some quality movies in between (like Bheja Fry, Parzania, Khosla ka Ghosla, Black Friday, etc) but the overall situation is really pathetic.. Plz dnt encourage ppl to make a fool out of u by promoting such cheap flicks... Movie-making is not everyone's job... but m nt surprised as anything is possible in this country..

What do you think of Om Shanti Om and Saawariya?

Ms. Champ..you are right everyone does have their own opinion. My opinion is this...between OSO and Saawariya...for me...Saawariya is the winner all the way. I went to watch Saawariya first only because everyone made such a big deal about how bad this movie was and how great OSO was...so i thought lets watch the bad one and then the good one...but to my surprise...Saawariya is one of the most beautiful films I have seen. I think SLB really brought out the best of both Ranbir Kapoor and Sonam...I love the idea that there is this one guy who brings hope and happiness to this town that seems to be plagued by unhappiness yet once he brings that happiness to others...he himself ends up with unhappiness because the one person who brings him happiness loves someone else. I wonderful. Once I went to watch Saawariya...I quite shocked as to why people though the movie was bad...the performances..direction...sets...were beautiful...yet I do believe this is not the BEST SLB movie...I think Black was far superior to it but it was beautiful nonetheless. Now OSO...i went to watch this movie...and the first half was so funny...although there were some parts that were just not great...for example...the fart thing SRK does...one of india's biggest actor reducing himself to this uncalled for part...i think that should have been cut because there was no reason to have that in there...then on top of that....the song main agar kahoon was so disappointing because the song is so beautiful and sonu nigam sang it wonderfully yet what SRK was doing on screen was not correlating with the passion that sonu nigam sang the song with...and deepika padukone had absolutely no scope until the very end where her acting was very convincing...but one scene does not make up for the rest of the movie where she goes virtually unnoticed..in fact...there is a huge chunk in the movie where she is missing and its all SRK all the time...lol...and the second half its like the movie never ends...the movie starts become sooo slow..and i wish it were better...i think SRK first half..was great....and the second half was just OK...no pun intended..lol...but i was quite disappointed in the movie..in fact...during OSO i started thinking about Saawariya and how wonderful that movie was...but the first half is def. funny...while the second half just ends up being boring for OSO...so if i had to rate OSO it would be a 2.5 out of 4 while Saawariya gets 3.5 out of 4....

Re: What do you think of Om Shanti Om and Saawariya?

Thanx Sheena... U really have cinematic sense n u r nt like others u believe in getting carried away by star power and nt the aesthetic sense of cinema...

Re: What do you think of Om Shanti Om and Saawariya?

what he fuck u retards .......Om Shanti Om is the best.

Saawariya is bullshit crap.

Re: What do you think of Om Shanti Om and Saawariya?

Mr. anonymous... i agree wid u.. u hav proved that one needs to have knowledge of cinema as well.. Otherwise dose who don't have a cinematic sense, tend 2 speak like u... ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha... Saawariya is 4 intellectuals... coz 1 needs brain 2 understand it... nt like OSO, where even a dhobi or sweeper cn grasp it...

Re: What do you think of Om Shanti Om and Saawariya?

the only gud thing bout OSO is its title i.e "OM SHANTI OM" that helps us to connect to God... otherwise the content is bull shit.. Even bull's shit is much better... he he he he he he he he...

Re: What do you think of Om Shanti Om and Saawariya?

Yes,om shanti om really was a good movie but Saawariya have a better story. But a lot of people don't see that thing.Saawariya have somthing that Om shanti Om don't have.I think tha't Saawariya was a better movie but when they let it see in more lights it gonnaby better, because the movie was in the dark.

overall i think saawariya was better.

Re: What do you think of Om Shanti Om and Saawariya?

Hey i agree with the anonymous person.........Om Shanti Om was the best movie ever......and Saawariya was a waste of my time!!!!!! Om shanti om had everything in it ...wats not to like????? Saawariya had no storyine!!!! it was pointless. Yes Ranbir Kapoor did fabulous acting and he's sexy but the movie flopped big time. If everyone reading this should go to indiafm.com and check Taran's review of these movies.... he's the only man who can give a decent review that i trust!!!!

Re: What do you think of Om Shanti Om and Saawariya?

both the movies r good not very good right?
how is my review?

Re: What do you think of Om Shanti Om and Saawariya?

i loved OSM so much more than saawariya.
OSM was entertaining and good songs. i wouldn't say that this was the best movie but it was a good movie after a long time. and definitely better than saawariya for me.

i could hardly finish watching saawariya. i just kept fast forwarding just to finish the movie to get to end.
this is only my opinion but i really didn't like the songs. can't bare listening to them...so slow.
and the story may be ok but i really didn't like the sets...the screen was so dark...i think that one big reason why i didn't like this movie...b/c everything was so dark. slb really should hv chosen some different setting.

Re: What do you think of Om Shanti Om and Saawariya?

Mr. anonymous.. dat means you watch movies for songs, synthetic youthfulness, and d entire exuberance.. no one makes a film without putting his efforts.. atleast mr. bhansali tried something different this time and delved into an absolutely unexplored territory... nt like farah khan who played safe by making such nonsensical melodramatic, full of hamming, show of glitzy faces, etc... In India, movies like OSO fare well at the box office because of the majority of the "cinema illiterates".. dere is an entire genre known as "film noir"... and movies like Saawariya n Manorama six feet under belong to it.. Hats off to SLB for making such a gem..
