Top 7 Directors???

Filmfare
, in its recent edition, has got together the likes of seven top-notch directors. The directors par excellence are Karan Johar, Rajkumar Hirani, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Ashutosh Gowarikar, Farhan Akhtar, Rakesh Roshan, and Rakeysh Mehra, all under one roof!!! It was Jatin Kampani's lenses that captured the all conquering 'The Directors' Cut'!

I am not sure how many of you would agree that these are really the Top 7 Directors as of today. I do not think that besides Rakesh Roshan anyone of them has enough credentials (or movies) to boast of. Karan Johar started off well with Kuchh Kuchh Hota Hai and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham but his Kabhi Alvida Na Kenha was pathetic. Rajkumar Hirani has a long way to go although he has shown how brilliant he is with Munnabhai series. Sanjay Leela Bhansali is one of the most overrated directors in my opinion. He has yet to show any original piece of work. May be Saawariya changes my point of view about him. I like his presentation though. Ashutosh Gowarikar has had Lagaan but then we all know it was an Aamir Khan show. Swades could not even achieve half without the Ace Khan. Farhan Akhtar showed signs of brilliance with Dil Chahta Hai and Lakshya but it has been down slide since then. Don might have been successful commercially but then that credit should go to the King Khan more than anyone else. Rakeysh Mehra has had only two movies so far. Aks was terrific in parts but, unfortunately, also terrible in some parts. Rang De Basanti was extra ordinary. But I still say we should wait for his next movie Delhi 6 before we put him on some pedestal.

That leaves us with only one genuine proven director in this lot. And that's Rakesh Roshan, who has been giving us non-stop super hit entertainers right from the days of Khudgarz and Khoon Bhari Maang. His Kala Bazar, Kishen Kanhaiyya, Khel, Karan Arjun, Kaho Na Pyaar Hai, Koi Mil Gaya and Krrish have all been money spinners at the box office. I think he is one of the most under-rated directors of Bollywood but when it comes to delivering Hits, he ranks among the best!

What do you say folks? I'll come out with my own list of Top 7 Directors soon. Until then, please let us know who you think should be in that list.

Re: Top 7 Directors???

is this top 7 directors of all time or just that are currently making movies? I am assuming the latter otherwise this could be a work of someone smoking something illegal:-)

even then....where's Yash Chopra? the guy stills makes movies every now and then.....If Sanjay Leela Bhansali is there for making visually great movies.....then they should add Nikhil Advani to that list too....

also I know the man has been kinda crazy for last few years.....but RGV needs to be mentioned somewhere....he did make Sarkar recently which was really good....I agree with Vijay on Rakesh Roshan, the man is amazing.....

I would also add Nagesh Kukonoor to the list, he's made some really good original movies.....if we are judging by two movies....how about Sriram Raghavan, both movies were really good and then we have Anurag Basu who is also good.....

I am sure they missed out a bunch of other good directors....this list is WEAK

Top 7 directors in terms of Box office

but in terms of quality they are not all the best. Where is vishal bhajwaj of omkara and maqbool, ram gopal varma of company, sarkar, satya. farhan aktar has a long way to go to be even named a top director. his dil chatha hai was awesome but lakshya sucked and don was even worse. sanjay leela bansali is the most overrated director in the world. all his films after khamoshi (which i thought was boring) , Hum dil de chuke sanam (ripoff of woh 7 din), devdas (remake), black (make of old english film a miracle worker) are not original. let's see how saawariya does. in my opinion i think it is going to be a flop when going up against om shanti om. rakshesh mehra's aks was boring as hell and was a ripoff of fallen (starring denzel washington). his rang de basanti was awesome and that is it. this guy has a long way to go. ashotosh gwadiar only had one hit his whole career (lagaan). his baazi sucked, his swades was boring to watch. let's see how his new one does. karan johar's film have no logic: they are good films but totally overrated films. his only real good film was the one he did not direct: kal ho na ho. in my opinion nikil should be in this categoy. he would have been if salaam e ishq was a hit. how biased. kunal kohli gave two decent films (hum tum and fanaah) why is he missing. where are the chopras: aditya and yash.
from my opinion these people were selected by filmfare who coincentially gave them in the last seven years best director awards. i mean look at the coincedence

2000 - rakesh roshan
2001 - ashutosh
2002 - sanjay leela
2003 - rakesh roshan
2004 - kunal kohli
2005 - sanjay leela
2006 - rakesh mehra

rajkumar hirani, rakesh roshan, rekahs mehra all gave big hits last year. is that why they are on the list. what about the director to dhoom 1 and 2. that guy deserves full marks. where is anil (gadar) sharma??? his apne this year was a pretty good film. one of the better films this year. and why don't small directors get their due.

filmfare has been full of crap for a while. not surprised about this.

Re: Top 7 Directors???

Well said Hero Heralal. Totally agree with you!

Re: Top 7 Directors???

hey.. herohiralal well said...

what about madhur bhandarkar and pradeep sarkar, the makers of corporate and parineeta respectively. i think those were movies with subject.

Re: Top 7 Directors???

Hero Heralal your heart is in the right place.....but please don't say that Lakshya and Baazi sucked and in the same breath say that Fanaa was a decent movie.....I agree Baazi was no Lagaan, but it was an okay movie.....Lakshya, in my opinion is probably one of the best war and coming of age movies made in India.....Hrithik did an amazing job in that role

Re: Top 7 Directors???

one thing is sure SLB is HIGHLY overrated, only good thing he did was song picturised in hum dil and 1942. everything else sucks big time. about rakesh mehra, I think AKS is very stylish movie for that time and that was the first movie when Mr.B got todays dashing french cut look. about BAAZI, i think its really good movie better than swdesh. about farhan, all of three movie are good specially DCH.

one of the most underrated director is RAJ SANTOSHI, who directs all the genres of movie if you check his movies. even priyadarshan and david dhawan are good, I didn't like some of their movies but if you talked about the money, than these are your guys whose movies make bucks.

Re: Top 7 Directors???

Aamir Khan's movies' directors should not be taken so seriously as it's Aamir who ghost directs those movies. Except for Ram Gopal Varma who directed Rangeela and has given many other great movies even without Aamir.

Re: Top 7 Directors???

Where is Raj Kumar Santoshi....???? No comparisons with movies like Ghayal, Khaki, Damini, Andaz apna apna...Just look at the diversification...Where is Vidhu Vinod Chopra...movies Like Parinda, 1942 A Love story...Directors with couple of good movies cant be rated as top 7. or is just the hype of the given top 7...where and how much is the original work...O you people cant you ever be sincere and differentiate between art and commercializm.

Re: Top 7 Directors???

We are loosing out greats like Subhash Ghai who can forget he gave superhits continuously for 25 years from Kalicharan to pardes and not to forget likes of Vishwanath, Karz,Vidhata,Karma,Meri Jung,Ram Lakhan,Saudagar,Khalnayak, he faultered only with two Yadein and Trimurti and not to forget the brilliance of Rajkumar Santoshi he gave super hit acton-Ghayal,Ghatak,KhakiSocially relevant-Daamini, Love Story -Barsaat,Out n Out comedy-Andaaz apna apna and patriotic-Shaheed.

Re: Top 7 Directors???

out of all the people on this particular list...i only agree with karan johar...sanjay leela bansali...and rakesh roshan...they are consistent...they have proven themselves...the others...well some 2 munna bhai movies...a lagaan...dil chahta hai..and rang de basanti...i don't think they are necessarily movies that prove them to be the biggest movie directors of all time...although these same movies proved to be some inovative and interesting cinema...and what about Subhash Ghai..David Dhawan..and all those you guys mentioned...they seriously need some due...and I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS LIST FORGOT YASH CHOPRA....if not yash chopra since he retired from directing after veer zaara...WHAT ABOUT ADITYA CHOPRA....damn...the man who came up with DDLJ is not on the list...obviously...there is something upp with filmfare...left outt some great directors as well as putting some great directors up there...well whatever....everyone hass their own tastes..right???

all of you guys mentioned some great directors who should be on this list....

Re: Top 7 Directors???

Farah Khan is proving her selff to be a great entertainer..Karan Johar has some work to do..to have a little more variety in his movies.. and Sajid khan surely showed me he has talent with hey babyy, which was his first movie lets see what else he can bring us..Raj Kumar Hirani can only be decided as a great only after he creates something out of the munna bhai series..

Re: Top 7 Directors???

I know to him much with FARHAN AKSHAY it made well the film GIFT I like very pretty anything much has to say! and also Karan Johar!

Where is Bhatts

Hold...on.I agree..for Rakesh..Roshan..and Sanjay Leela Bhansali..to be up there..but where is Mahesh Bhatt..he made some of the biggest critically..acclaimed movies...which potrayed many realiztic views..unlike..some foul commercial movies...Mahesh Bhatt's movies like Arth, Saransh, Zakham,....Daddy, Sadak, Sir..all thes emovies..are different..and very touching...

Re: Top 7 Directors???

These 7 do not even come close to Manmohan Desai, Prakash Mehra, Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Raj Kapoor, Guru Dutt, Bimal Roy, Yash Chopra, Vijay Anand, Subhash Ghai and the likes. But guys don't fight over it, this list is clearly for the current directors. You can say that of the current lot, some genuine names are indeed missing. But then its been ages since Filmfare lost its credibility. Do not take the list seriously. Move on...

Re: Top 7 Directors???

i would just like to add the name of GULZAR, whoes Maachis, Ijaazat, Kinara, Khushboo, Aandhi, Koshish, Parichay are just great in every aspect.

And I think Karan Zohar doesn't even have an in depth vision...all cheap movies except Kaal Ho Na Ho.

Re: Top 7 Directors???

of all the filmmakers mentioned above,, where is filmmaker VIPUL AMRUTLAL SHAH??? he has made 3 big hits . AANKHEN , WAQT and NAMASTEY LONDON.. and now forthcoming SINGH IS KINNG. he should also be mentioned . and where is ANEES BAZMEE??? where is SHYAM BENEGAL? Where is GOVIND NIHLANI??
