Profiling: American Idol Sanjaya Malakar

You might ask Sanjaya, who? Sanjaya Malakar is the first American lad of Indian Origin, to reach the top 24 of American Idol. Barely 17, hailing from Federal Way, Washington, Sanjaya auditioned for American Idol in Seattle, WA. A shy boy, who was supposed to have quoted that overcoming his shyness was the toughest thing in the competetion. Read through his Profile here.
Inspired by Stevie Wonder, the boyish charm shows strong commitment and guts in his vocals. His sister Shyamali Malakar was also in the competetion but, is now out of the semi finals. I saw his semi finals performance last night. He selected another Stevie Wonder song "Knock me off my feet". Unfortunately, the song goes, "I dont wanna bore you with it, but I love you....". Just as I was afraid, Simon Cowell said "The song says I don't wanna bore you but, we are bored". Well, the song may not be the right choice, but this boy has has been nothing but a Hollywood favorite already. His innocence and sincerity have been his plus points. Raised around classical music and trained all his life in classical music, he does have true singing talent.
Americal Idol airs every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 8/7c on FOX. Be sure to watch out for Sanjaya and to vote for him if, he stays on next week.

Re: Profiling: American Idol Sanjaya Malakar
this year's lot is so aweful though......I hope Sanjaya wins
Re: Profiling: American Idol Sanjaya Malakar
Sanjaya is a cute kid, but that's about it right now. He has a nice voice, not a great voice, he has a sweet face, not a drop dead georgeous face, he also has a streak of realism to him. He knows he's trailing by a mile, and he was as shocked as anyone to remain in the competition tonight. He knows he didn't deserve to stay based on either of his last performances and he knows he bought himself a bonus week. This is nothing to do with him being Indian, and shame on anyone who tries to make it about that - we all have to stand on our own personal merits in everything, not expect special treatment for less than special personal merits. He has little charisma when he performs, and he has neither vocal power, stamina or agility and voting for him may be nice for him and his family, but it's prolonging the inevitable. I read the comment by the last 'reviewer' and to say he was 'inspired' by Stevie Wonder is simply not true. Be more honest - this kid is not inspired in any way. He is going through the motions that anyone who can produce a nice sound from their vocal equipment would go through. Stevie Wonder is one of the greatest singers, writers and musicians of this era. Sanjaya's sister told him about one of Stevie Wonder's songs. Sanjaya proceeded to warble a small, insignificant version of the song which wowed nobody. That is it! He has a great smile - that's probably his best attribute right now, but be honest - a guy went home tonight who should not have left the show before Sanjaya. And that man had the spirit and generosity to say to America that he thought Sanjaya would beat him. We all know that is not the case and frankly it's a shame Sanjaya did not have the decency to concede his place to the better singer. Now that would have have shown he has SOMETHING about him.
Re: Profiling: American Idol Sanjaya Malakar
VOR you are right on all counts except the last point.....I don't think I'll blame the kid for not "having the decency to concede his place to the better singer" first of all its a competition and if you survived then that means that America thought you were better than the other guy so by conceding that you are insulting America's choice.....if he thought he wasn't good, he wouldn't be in that competition.....just think about what your saying....
secondly he's just a kid and still has to learn a lot of diplomacy that is around him.....maybe when he grows up and he'll console the other guy and say hey tough luck man.....I know you did better than me....but shit happens....
This has happened so many times in American Idol, more talented people getting voted off all the time....Jennifer Hudson, Bo and last years Chris or whatever his name was the rocker dude.....it's not any of the contestants fault that they got voted off.....you can lay the blame squarely on America
and in Sanjaya's case whether it was the Indians that kept him alive or if it was his cute face....no one will know, but the fact is he lives to see another week and he needs to make the maximum use of it
Re: Profiling: American Idol Sanjaya Malakar
Partly agree with VOR's comments but not all. Completely agree with Aslam.
American Idol is not only a singing competition. I differ with Paula here. It is about showmanship + singing talent. If you have noticed, Sanjaya is one among the singers who has not sung a wrong note so far. Being from the classical music background, I can tell if, someone looses pitch or scale anywhere.
Most of the singers who are very good singers sing complex waved songs and they loose pitch and scale quite a few times.
Unfortunately for Sanjaya, he is a good singer but not a true performer. He is still quite an innocent kid. The fact that he picked another lame mundane song (and of course sang it with no wrong notes), despite being zapped by the judges for his previous week's performance shows, his lack of showmanship required for American Idol.
He will probably be out of the race next week if, not earlier. There is no way he is going further with the competition unless he seriously considers his showmanship capabilities. Chances are bleak.
He sure is humble to know that he did not deserve to stay. He did show his disbelief. This is a competition and if, Indians are helping him stay, so be it, for however long.
Re: Profiling: American Idol Sanjaya Malakar
This kid is so awkward and it’s embarrassing to watch him. He should just stick to fudge packing. Kick this kid out!!!
Re: Profiling: American Idol Sanjaya Malakar
Gay. Like Michael Jackson.
Re: Profiling: American Idol Sanjaya Malakar
hey guys he is not gay but is totally hot!!! his smile is so smexi!!!!! he is strait!!!!!
Re: Profiling: American Idol Sanjaya Malakar
Dude, Sanjaya is so gay. The hula "girl". Come on, that was pretty ballsy on national TV. He really does look an act like a girl. And the sad thing is he voice is not great at all. I strongly think that America made a mistake tonight with those booted off A.I. I agree with Barba gettin' the boot, but not Sabrina. She is very talented!!!!! Sanjaya doesn't hold a candle to any of them!!!
Re: Profiling: American Idol Sanjaya Malakar
What does "SPAMMING" in votes mean? And how do I do it?
Re: Profiling: American Idol Sanjaya Malakar
YOUR COMMENT IS EMBARRASSING- SHOWS TREMENDOUS LACK OF CHARACTER ON YOU PART
Re: Profiling: American Idol Sanjaya Malakar
is there ANY way that i could find his email ?? sanjaya`s email ..
im like really depressed and it wud mean THE WORLD to me if i cud be in contact with him ..
ive been depressed for over 4 years now and im only 17 ..
and i just want something good to happen to me
sanjaya .. PLZZ.. take me out of this dark place
Sanjaya -- is he worth it?
i'm really proud that one of our indian has made it to the top 12 on the American Idol, but it is surprising as well. the boy has talent, no question about it, but he is too much within his own shell and that makes him look too uncomfy and lot more clumsy on the screen. also he seems to be low on energy. with no energy levels ("josh"), i doubt if he is gonna make it too far. but so it seems the biased and sympathy votes of indians will drop some of the other best talents on the show.
yeh we indians should be proud that our boy has made it this far but that should not make us give him false votes and put down other nice talents. let us be thruthful to our selves and not the make the same MISTAKE that we do with voting for WRONG Govts as we had done in our past. voting is our right and let us not misuse our rights. Sanjaya has a long way to go to hone his talents!!!!!!!! the harsh reality.
to aslam @ vinn
well seems that you guys think that all Americans voted for him. but you guyz just might be wrong. most of the votes he receives is from Indians. my freind & colleagues had given him so many votes, i too did, one even gave him 10,000 votes. but the question is -- arent we misusing the power to vote just because our Indian boy is standing on the stage. we did not vote for him for his talent but only for the fact that he was an indian. and its up to you to accept or not accept this bitter thruth.
Re: Profiling: American Idol Sanjaya Malakar
Aks I didn't say that.....when I said America, I obviously included all the Indians that live here and have SMS enabled phones and care enough about American idol.....what I was saying was responding to someone's comment before that Sanjaya should have decency to bow out of the competition because he's not talented.....which to me is a load of crap....because if he didn't think he was talented he wouldn't be there in the first place.....
I love the fact that Indians are voting for him and are actually acting like a close knit minority community......I dont know if this thing is open to people outside US but if it is then there is no way our boy's gonna lose coz you know how man Indians are there in the world right?.....yeah A LOT!!!!
thats xactly my point
yeh you got it right on the point. that was what i wanted to make it clear. do you think it would justify us, as Indians, to vote for someone, overlooking the talent? surely, Brandon who had sung with artists like Anatatasia and Christina Aguilera rules and is heavier than when compared to a nymph, Sanjaya. Sanjaya is just learning and trust me to hear the "boos" from the crowd for Sanjaya(?) .
Sanjaya is not the only 17 yr old on the show, thus he has no excuses for defending himself. there is Jordin and if you actually look and compare the talents between the two 17 yr olds, you will see the VAST difference yourself. and you will get to know what i am speaking about.
second, if you remember or have heard Sanjaya sing in the 3rd week, "Waiting for the world to change". that track doesnt have much instrumental, its basically a simple track much similar to what we hear from James Blunt or Daniel Powter. its just the way to put melody in words but to add to everyone's shock, Sanjaya wasnt able to pull that track off even mediocre.
third, if you really take time to listen to other singers from the very same show and try comparing their energy levels, their vocals and their pitch, Sanjaya doesnt score even average (now come on lets be honest to ourselves, its not hard after we have heard all of them). and you dont have to compare him with serious talents like Lakisha or Melinda but try with smaller talents like Blake or even Phil. do you think Sanjaya comes close to their "JOSH"?
but one thing is for sure, wish Sanjaya's sister made it through instead of Sanjaya. she has more stronger vocals than him and would have had a better Chance to be on Top6. but with Sanjaya, I'm afraid if i will ever vote for him.
my question to all Indians is -- "is it worth voting for a person just becaose he/she is an Indian and seriously overlooking the talent?"
Re: Profiling: American Idol Sanjaya Malakar
I think the boy is good in fact the ones who need to leave are those judges they need to be changed they've been there long enough and they are totally boring. Once they choose the top 24 they need to keep their awful remarks to themselves because they thought all 24 were worthy being up there and any of them could leave in the weeks that followed. Also that Lakisha and dolittle girl probably belong back in their churches thats where they belong not in hollywood - no offense just a personal opinion. We need to see young fresh singers not these old fat guys looking like mental retards living on big Macs everyday thats not my american idol. Looking at the competitors I think Sanjaya is as good as any of the rest. In fact I don't know why his being chosen is creating so much furor and one sees the judges hate him everyday it looks like there is so much underlying racism. They should have been prepared when they chose him as the top 24 rather than look so surprised week after week. The ones who should resign should be the judges because I think they are awful. Fat Randy always choses a Black who get the black votes, Drunk Paula essentially does the same and Catty Simon loves the church music thats probably what he listens to all day. It was horrible to watch them give Diana Ross a standing ovation because the woman has passed her prime and fell really behind all the contestants, it would have been nice to hear one of Simons comments but you didn't because he obviously knows when to shut up.
Re: Profiling: American Idol Sanjaya Malakar
umm, am i missing something here but who thinks this guy's good looking? i thinkhe's pretty ugly
ignoring the talent or being a humbug?
first of all, diana ross to them is like amitabh bacchan to us. dont we give him a standing oviation IGNORING THE NEW TALENTS? and she is one of the most successful stars spanning for more than 4 decades by now. second, when you say that melinda and lakisha are fat, then lets not forget our very own lata mangeshkar, asha bhosle, sunidhi chauhan, alka yagnik and vasundhara das (the best of india) and many more to count are also fat. talent doesnt fit with the physical apearence neither does fame.
i now seriously have started doubting the loyalties of indians. seriously, i thought the foreign and our domestic relationships were based on a "symbiotic relationship", helping each other grow, one technologically and other financially. but from your talks, i neither wonder nor question why the "firangi" have started harboring an aversion for us.
would you feel the same way about sonu nigam, anu malik or farah khan when they spout out stuff about contestants?. ofcourse if you remember last season, i think you know what i am reminding you of. you wouldnt, so what makes you spout out hate for the compettition that isnt held in india in first place?
i feel we need to ask ourselves a question -- where do our loyalties lie? if our loyalties lie with our country and if we value relationships more than money, then why do we leave our developing country and help developed countries with technology? or if we overlook our loyalties and go in for other countries, then should we be loyal to the hand that is currently feeding us?.
the same thing happened with Big brother when shilpa was taunted by jade. why did we react then? just because it was our CELEBRITY? people from different cultures, religions and races face that everyday? why wasnt any action taken back then? or was it just a publicity stunt from our side? seriously, ask yourself this question -- do lakisha and melinda really look like a retard? was jennifer hudsona retard just because she is fat? does being fat make one look like a retard?
also, we say that indians are the most accepting of all races, but from your words will we still be able to say that? your dislike for someone should not make you speak about their physical appearences. how are we not rascists and fascists, when we consider the fair, thin body over a coloured, thin one?
and yes please dont be rude about others, esp their appearences, faith and places of worship. just becoz you look good that doesnt mean that you can speak about others. remember, when we make a joke out of someone then God puts us in his/her shoes for us to suffer. this is a open forum for discussion. spouting out hate for others only seems to make you look like a troubled teen, a retard yourself or much worse -- a (religious --?) fanatic.
Re: Profiling: American Idol Sanjaya Malakar
I wish people would just stop for a minute and remember that this boy is just a kid who has a lot more nerve than many of us to perform in front of millions of viewers. He may not be the best in the world but he is good. We need to support him for his effort and persistance in the midst of all the cruel comments about him. I read one comment that even involved his family. That shows little character in the person who wrote it. I wish him the best and I admire hime. KEEP UP THE GOOD JOB SANJAYA!!! God bless you and your family. S.P.
small kid?
since when are 17 yr olds small kids? and that kid had signed the contract knowing of everything he would receive -- good and bad. of he is still a diaper-needing baby, then he should probably not be there.
and he has NO TALENT. i will support Abhijeet sawant, Rex, Shamit, Arijheet or any other guy, who is talented, but i feel that Sanjaya is putting INDIA AND Indians to shame by making a fool out of his clumsy self. he just cannot sing.
have you people heard him sing? except for his 1st audition, that boy is only whispering. his voice doesnt come out. i dont know why Shamali is not there. Sanjaya is undeserving, Shamalai deserves to be instead of him.
misrepresenting Indian Talent?
before anyone can pass biased judgment about me not knowing about music, i am a music teacher and i feel that i know music enough to give this opinion about Sanjaya. and also let me remind all of you that we Indians stand for "Satya mev jayate".
Sanjaya is misrepresenting our Indian Talent in more than one ways. Indians like Norah Jones for example, inspite of her origins coming from 2 different ethnicities -- American and Indian, she deserved fully to win the 5 grammys in her very first album. but Sanjaya is misrepresenting Indian talent in a wrong limelight.
let us be honest, have we heard him sing? can he take a high note? what about his vocal range? what about his pitch and shrills. what about his sur, raaga and taalam? he destroyed the Diana Ross song last week. and why is he doing all of this? to show to the world that Indians are dumb, with talents that could be mocked?.
IS SANJAYA TALENTED? the ANSWER to that question will only be revealed if Sanjaya participated with other contestants on Indian Idol. will he be even in the final 20? would our judges -- Anu, Sonu and Farah be pleased with such a lame performances, week after week, from Sanjaya? let us put that kid on Indian Idol and see how talented he really is?
if he is not as talented, then why are we eager to create issues and scandals with American Idol? why are we creating publicity stunts just becoz he is our Indian? i think we Indians stand for "Satya mev jayate" but are we displaying it in our actions? and why are we creating problems concerning rascism when we are rascistly voting only our own Indian? who is a rascist then, them ho have put different people from different religions and races on the stage or us who are selfishly voting Sanjaya despite the fact that he has no talent what-so-ever?.
i dont represent myself as an Indian first here but as a guru and a music teacher for past more than 15 years. from where i see him, Sanjaya will not do any justice to MUSIC. i feel that music is just not an art, it is like worshipping God and when someone kills the beauty of the music then i find it very disturbing to stand up for the one doing injustice.
Re: Profiling: American Idol Sanjaya Malakar
he did great on Tuesday (atleast better than his previous performances) I think he'll survive another week....there were others that were awful....especially that girl with colored hair trying to pull of paint it black....that's a fuckin tall order to pull off Rolling stones.....and she was AWFUL
Re: Profiling: American Idol Sanjaya Malakar
It is a disgrace to have someone with so little talent as part of the top 12. So many really talented people have been booted off because of people voting for something other than music abilities. This is wrong!!!!! If Sanjaya actually wins the competition American Idol will be finished. No American would ever watch the show again. People should be voting on TALENT not race. I am outraged that he has made it this far and don't believe he can vocally touch any of the others who have been excluded. In fact, I don't know how he was even chosen to begin with.

Re: Profiling: American Idol Sanjaya Malakar
Ok, this is after the fact, considering the last comment here was posted back in April. But I think with hindsight of all that's happened with Sanjaya since, it bears saying.
I noticed an interesting path with these comments, from mostly positive and glowing (after his audition and first couple of weeks) to "nice kid, but..." to downright hostility as the week's progressed, then gradually coming back around to "nice kid; wish him well" after being voted off. I think it would be intersting to look at what's happened in the interim.
In the weeks after his elimination, Sanjaya certainly skyrocketed in the national consciousness. While his fans, the loyal Fanjayas, may have been staging one of the biggest American Idol boycotts in the show's history (ratings dipped 9% for the week of Idol Gives Back), Sanjaya himself was everywhere-at the White House Correspondents' Dinner, getting slimed on Nicklelodian, bantering with Kimmel, doing the Letterman list, dancing on Venice beach with the UCLA cheerleaders, placing high up on some of the nation's most esteemed polls and lists. People may have loved or hated him on the show, but in the weeks that followed, EVERYONE wanted a piece of him-as if, at the expense of sounding morbid, they were looking for any excuse to examine and see what made him tick. If he wasn't a credible star for his singing at this point, he was definitely a celebrity "face" and name on a par with Paris Hilton.
But of course, this isn't really the kind of "fame" he sought when he auditioned. Like all of the young hopefuls who audition and are put though, he just wanted a chance to make it in this business as a singer and entertainer. Sadly, even though he has a pleasant voice that I feel will mature into a great one, and certainly emerged as one of American Idol Season 6's most memorable entertainers (once he worked through the nerves and the jitters) it seemed he might remain for many little more than the "joke" and the "jester" of the show.
However, with the advent of the Idol tour, it seems the tide may be at long last turning in his favor. His perforamnces have been winning some mostly good to great reviews, and even a lot of non-fans are finally coming around to him, either admitting once they've seen the show, "He was a lot better than I thought," to "He's actually pretty good!" The bashing has become almost passe' at this point, and maybe that is as it should be, for it's pretty tough for even the most diehard haters to keep up that level of passion. Inevitably, there usually comes a point, by the time the tour hits most cities, where everyone begins to view the entire Top 10 cast ensemble as family, and even the ones they most heatedly wanted to vote off at the height of the competition begin to be seen with more nostalgic affection than disdain.
Maybe that makes sense, though, considering that once the competition is over and done, it really IS time to bid all of them good-bye with well wishes for a happy life and a bright future-whatever that future might entail.
And I have a very good feeling that Sanjaya may fare better in the long run than most. He's still young enough to fully develop his potential; he's already being recognized on the tour as one of the small handful of this year's Top 10 who has real "stage presence"; his studio downloads, for those who haven't heard them, are actually pretty darn good. Plus, as he's proven with the Bill Vendall clip, he can act, too (c'mon, admit it, you were fooled, if only for a minute, weren't you?). And, as is already being evidenced, that cute face and smile is already maturing into a very chiseled, handsome one-the kid has done some fast growing up, and the only way for him to go from here is...well, up.
