Water shortlisted for Oscars, Rang De Basanti and Lage Raho Munnabhai out

Deepa Mehta's film Water about the plight of widows in 1930s India has been shortlisted in the best foreign film category for the Oscars. The Canadian film, which stars John Abraham and Lisa Ray, finds place in the list along with the acclaimed Black Book from the Netherlands and Volver from Spain, reports Variety.com.

Other films in the list are Days of Glory (Algeria), After the Wedding (Denmark), Avenue Montaigne (France), The Lives of Others (Germany), Pan's Labyrinth (Mexico) and Vitus (Switzerland).

Rang De Basanti, the official entry from India and Lage Raho Munnabhai didn't get short listed in the Best Foreign Film category. Interestingly, Deepa Mehta's Water got selected into the same category. But it is to be noted that though Water is an Indian tale, it is an official entry from Canada for the Oscar.

The final five entries will be announced on Jan 23.

Water shortlisted for Oscars, Rang De Basanti and Lage Raho Munnabhai out posted at IndianPad.com

Re: Water shortlisted for Oscars, Rang De Basanti and Lage Raho

Water in final nominations ahead of RDB and LRMB. This just shows how biased Academy awards are. They don't want to see a progressive India, They want to show 1930's india and show conditions of women in india.

Lets face it  any movie that potrays india in bad  way will be nominated for oscar .

It is not the 1930's India. We still have this plenty in our country. It is just not in the cities with techy environment.

Re: Water shortlisted for Oscars, Rang De Basanti and Lage Raho

I think you are right Guest.....stuff like this and killing of female babies etc. are still quite prevalant in rural India....we live in our high tech cities and watch feel good tv programming so much that we think this is a thing of the past.....where as its clearly not

Re: Water shortlisted for Oscars, Rang De Basanti and Lage Raho

Agreed that there are parts in India where these things still happen....but we've been fed this concept for I don't know how long, like 50 fuckin years....it has not changed anything.....the big thing is if there are new movies coming out of India that are entertaining and brave.....they should be represented.....

I can see why Academy chose Water, and honestly it did have everything to appeal to the western pallette......as opposed to a Rang De or Lage Raho.....

it was liked by everyone and possibly might have a chance to win it.....But they should only judge foreign movies when they have good enough understanding of the land's culture.....and not by what americans want to watch.....Crouching tiger got nominated because American's like flying asians.....not because it was a great movie (it was entertaining....but so are a lot of other movies)

I am not saying that they should select the most popular movie of the land.....but also consider what is relevant and how it ties to the nation's social fabric NOW....

Re: Water shortlisted for Oscars, Rang De Basanti and Lage Raho

We should not be running after Oscars. Its no big deal if we don't have a single Oscar. After all who says they are not biased. I would like to bring this point here - I know many people who condemn Indian awards like Filmfare etc but vouch for Oscars!!! Why??? They are as bad (biased) as ours.

Our culture is very different from theirs. It'll take them multiple viewing of RDB and Lage Raho Munnabhai to understand the underlying emotions, humor, story, concept. So just cheer up guys!  And hope our filmmakers continue making good cinema (whatever little in number).  2006 saw many good movies. Lets hope a n even better 2007!

Re: Water shortlisted for Oscars, Rang De Basanti and Lage Raho

wow....It's true though...American media and everything makes india look very bad. From the older film, city of joy, to what we see everyday on the news. They love shitting on india. People dont want to except the fact that india is progressing therefor a film has to be set in the 1930's in order to show the negatives that existed. Yes, water was a good film but every indian film that becomes popular in the international world either has to do with poverty, a dirty indian city, or any sort of misery. Rang de basanti was a good film and would show the world what india is really all about. But films like these wont ever get recognition because people outside of india dont want to see a better india.
