India's entry at the Oscars

The Film federation of India (FFI) started collecting nominations in the first week of September and the decision will be made soon as to which movie will represent India this year at the big Award show. Speculations are on in Bollywood with a number of movies lobbying to get in, however the frontrunners for this year are - Rang De Basanti, Omkara and Lage Raho Munnabhai. Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna and Krrish are close behind these movies.

So with the race on, we at MovieWalah decided to start a little discussion and see what our readers think should be the one movie to get selected.

Rang De Basanti (RDB) is my personal choice, just because the movie, is a different sort of coming of age story (which, by the way, Hollywood adores). It's very "Indian" in its theme and presentation and not to mention a huge box office success. The movie is path breaking because it took a road less traveled and came out with a win. In addition, Aamir Khan has previous Hollywood lobbying experience :-)

Lage Raho Munnabhai (LRM) is a close second in my opinion, again because the movie has a whole different take on something which ceased to be cool 50 years ago, Gandhism. They took the risk and eventually came out successful and at the same time clicked with the younger audiences. So why am I choosing RDB over LRM? I think it's more closer to the Hollywood taste, it's a bit down to earth and I dont think Hollywood will truly appreciate the chemistry and one liners between Circuit and Munna, which is what makes LRM so cool.

Omkara is a good movie, but when compared to RDB and LRM, it seems a "safer" approach if you will. The movie is a great adaptation of a masterpiece, and had it come out in any other year, it would have been my choice. But I think if we send a RDB we have a better chance at Oscars, because when they (Oscar jury) see Omkara, they'll applaud for great direction but then they'll question how is it different from other great adaptations we've seen in the last 50 years. Its in this aspect, RDB and LRM stand out.

As far as Krrish and KANK are concerned, they shouldn't be in the list in the first place.....

My honest opinion, let me know what you guys think......

RDB should be India's entry

RDB should be India's entry to Oscars. But you never know the guys sitting out there. Last year they selected Paheli over Black and Iqbal. Weird, huh!

Btw, even Lage Raho Munnabhai is a good bet. Gandhi is more popular than Aamir Khan any given day :) And he has Oscar connection too, since 1982.

Out and out comedies rarely

Out and out comedies rarely win Oscars, unless they are mixed with drama (Life is Beautiful, Amelie). I would go for Rang de Basanti. The academy has a history of making up for past dismissals.

both RANG DE BASANTI & LAGE

both RANG DE BASANTI & LAGE RAHO MUNNABHAI are very good movies and strongest contenders for Oscar.
RDB is technically superior too lage raho munnabhai, however Lage Raho Munnabhai too is technically sound.
Lage Raho would work at Oscars because Gandhi sells - as said in RDB itself.
However my personal choice is RDB.

ofcourse KANK as it has got

ofcourse KANK as it has got very much publicity in USA. And also shahrukh is the king of overseas

Why are desis so hung up on

Why are desis so hung up on a desi film getting that elusive Oscar? Do desi films need some kind of approval from Hollywood?

Hollywood and Bollywood are two different ways to view life. In general I like Hollywood movies more than Bollywood ones (too mushy, slow etc.), but you have to take the movies for they are meant to be and what they are created for.

Here's Big B's take on this which I partly agree with:

Heck, I don't need no pontificating Hollywood critic to tell me RDB is a great movie. And how would this critic understand Lagaan if they don't know a thing about cricket?

I'd rather celebrate the stuff that makes RDB, DCH etc. special than bother about getting an Oscar.

ask the red sox fans why

ask the red sox fans why were they so hung up on getting that world series.....its a matter of pride and why is it a matter of pride? thats a deeper socio-political discussion....when the most powerful country in the world makes you the most favored nation every body in that nation rejoices.....so if their film industry recognizes your work....its a big deal.

Believe it or not, Hollywood movies have more universal appeal than any other country's film industry and if they recognize your work its good shit....so I wont call it being hung up.....winning an oscar can change some of these people's lives....

About comment for cricket, I

About comment for cricket, I guess this noose item on BBC should be able to provide some perspective..

"One of the fastest-growing games in the United States is, surprisingly, cricket."

[...] Finally our FFI has

[...] Finally our FFI has picked the right movie to represent India. Now it'll be fun if the two movies on Indian origin make it to final five - RDB and Water. As we mentioned in our previous post, this year the other leading movies in the reckoning were Lage Raho and Omkara. Besides these three, there were 6 other movies, which is kinda low compared to other years. [...]

RANG DE BASANTI WILL RANG

RANG DE BASANTI WILL RANG ALL THE INDIANS WITH COLOUR OF OSCAR.

rang de basanti ofcourse
