Bollymeter - Aug 2006
Statistics, Ranks, Awards, Numbers, Earnings …. these hold special place in movie fans' minds. There is but one winner, however, if you ain't the first, does not mean you are the last!
This Bollymeter will track the ranking of the top actors in the current year. The overall rank is a weighted average of several parameters, including but not limited to, number of releases, number of hits, number of flops, actor's contribution in making or breaking the movie, critical acclaim, and of course, verdict on the street.
Here's the list for Aug 2006.
Aug-2006

1. Aamir Khan
Rang De Basanti and Fanaa bring back this thinking method actor to the top. And rightfully so. Both these movies did record shattering business.
2. Hrithik Roshan
Krrish! Roshan Jr works wonders with Papa Roshan, yet again.
3. Ajay Devgun
Golmaal and Omkara - as diverse as one can get.
4. Shah Rukh Khan
KANK brings back King Khan to top 5. Would Don put him on top again? Watch this space.
5. Sharman Joshi
Might have played supporting roles in Rang De Basanti and Golmaal, but boy did he play well! Yes, his fans would vouch for that.
6. Abhishek Bachchan
With KANK hitting bull's eye, AB Baby is sure rocking. Dhoom 2, Umraao Jaan and Guru would only enhance his standing.
7. John Abraham
Riding high on Taxi No. 9211.
8. Emraan Hashmi
If only he did not have disasters like Jawani Diwaani and The Killer, this serial kisser would have been right there at No. 2 with hits like Aksar and Gangster.
9. Saif Ali Khan
Omkara might not have made Langda Tyagi his chief but Saif Ali Khan sure is ruling.
10. Amitabh Bachchan, Akshay Kumar
There could be others too at No. 10 right now but let this superhit baap-beta jodi be here for KANK and Phir Hera Pheri respectively despite their individual flops like Family, Darna Zaroori Hai, Mere Jeewan Saathi and Humko Deewana Kar Gaye.
And, among the actresses, the list is as under:

1. Kareena Kapoor
Yes, it's Kareena at the top of charts with average hits like 36 China Town, Chup Chup Ke and superlative performance in Omkara.
2. Kajol
What a comeback! Fanaa left audiences wanting more of this ever beautiful Zooni Ali Baig.
3. Rimi Sen
Surprised? Even Rimi Sen would be surprised to see herself ranked so high. But does not she deserve to be here, proving lucky mascot yet again, with Phir Hera Pheri and Golmaal!
4. Bipasha Basu
In terms of releases, 2006 truly belongs to this dusky bengali bombshell. Jaane Hoga Kya, Hum Ko Deewana Kar Gaye, Darna Zaroori Hai, Phir Hera Pheri, Corporate, Omkara and more to come. With the last three successful on box office, Bipasha sure is going places.
5. Priyanka Chopra
Krrish! I want to see more of her. And am pretty confident, no one would oppose that.
6. Rani Mukherjee
If anyone could do justice to Maya in KANK, it was Rani. However, Rani, please do not cry anymore. You made the wrong choice in KANK. Hope you'll get over with that soon.
7. Preity Zinta
Swinging with AB Baby certainly helped.
8. Sameera Reddy
She needs to shed some weight and maybe some more clothes to ride the Taxi to success.
9. Udita Goswami
'Udita would also be there!'. Yes Himesh, She's really proving lucky for you Aksar. Your US concert is really rocking!
10. This slot is open
Attention Aishwarya, you need to have at least one release to be counted here.

Boss, how can you have Big B
Boss, how can you have Big B down there at number 10? He is beyond rankings and should be there in a lifetime hall of fame. Even in KANK his performance took the shine off an otherwise reasonable performance by SRK (am I being a bit too biased here ;-)?).
Saurabh, i do not see
Saurabh, i do not see anything wrong your being biased to Big B. Who ain't?
However, as i mentioned earlier, this Bollymeter resets every calendar year. So, his past laurels do not matter; not even his 2005 super successes like Black, Waqt, Bunty n Babli or Sarkar.
Who knows, he might just as well bounce back with Nishabd, Eklavya, Babul, God Tussi Great Ho and Shoot Out at Lokhandwala. Keep watching this space.
If you do monthly rating it
If you do monthly rating it will continue to have lots of volatality. I think we should have a cumulative annual ranking as well, it will add higher degree of creditability.
Ambuj, this is a cumulative
Ambuj, this is a cumulative ranking, posted every month. For eg. Sep-2006 ranking would take all movies released from Jan-2006 to Sep-2006. However, this meter is reset every year.
Vijay, I might be
Vijay,
I might be interesting to know the actual statistics behind your rankings. What parameters are being talked about? At the first glance it appears that some 10 random names are published. My twin sister, Ms Rosemary Lele also feels the same. Can you please look into this?
The overall rank is a
The overall rank is a weighted average of several parameters, including but not limited to, number of releases, number of hits, number of flops, actor's contribution in making or breaking the movie, critical acclaim, and of course, verdict on the street. As an example, you can take Bipasha Basu's case.
However, you may ask - "Why is she not no.1?" Look at her flops and you would get the answer, Ms Mario and Ms Lele.
I agree with the parameters
I agree with the parameters considered and am happy that the ranking is a comprehensive representation of overall contribution. However I am not convinced if resetting the counter is the best way. I understand you cannot have a system where the same old superstars keep ruling the rankings but resetting every year could suddenly cause sudden changes towards the first quarter of the year. Hits towards the year-end would get undermined and freak hits in the new year will get undue weightage. I suggest you explore and implement rankings based on a trailing period basis - so these could be based on the trailing 12 months on a rolling basis. This would ensure that one remains in the top 10 only on the basis of consistent performance.
Also besides the lead actor and actresses, the following categories should also be looked at - Top 5 directors, top 10 supporting artists, top 5 comedians, top 5 music directors, top 10 singers, top 10 critics (or moviewalah users') choice, top 5 films etc etc.
Also, I think its about time we stop having distinction between lead actors and lead actresses - why not have only one list for top 10 lead artists!
great points Saurabh.....I
great points Saurabh.....I like the concept of trailing 12 months....just to keep it fair
I will suggest that the site
I will suggest that the site should maintain a moving average for the ratings:-
Rank(2008-Jan) = (1-alpha)*Rank(2006) alpha*Rank(2007 from Jan to Dec)
The choice of alpha will determine how fast the ranking wants to unlearn the past accomplishemnts of actors. Infact alpha can parameterized as a function of ages of actors/actresses. Eg. older actresses need a very low value of alpha since we arent interested much in what they accomplished when they were young.
Why is Sharman Joshi ahead
Why is Sharman Joshi ahead of Abhishek Bachchan? by that logic Paresh Rawal should be in the top 5 after all he did Phir Hera Pheri, Gol Maal and Chup Chup ke and he was shining in all three....
We are collecting feedback
We are collecting feedback from all for Bollymeter. We would come back with a revised strategy for Sep rankings. Thanks for suggestions.
I dont get it....how can SRK
I dont get it....how can SRK even show up on the list. He SUCKSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!
Are we only considering box-office success for these rankings. What about critics acclaim?
I am surprised Vidya Balan didnt show up on the actress' list
Vidya Balan would certainly
Vidya Balan would certainly appear in Sep list. Remember, this was Aug list, before Lage Raho Munnabhai marched its way to success.
We do consider critical acclaim too - Omkara being the classic example.
shut up,mr asshole vijay
shut up,mr asshole vijay
akshaye khanna is missing
akshaye khanna is missing here. i think he should be up there in top 10.
i'll wait and watch for
i'll wait and watch for Sep-2006.
I like when I see Amir on
I like when I see Amir on top,but hritik must not be on 2th position.there must be Abhishek.
When do we get to see Sep
When do we get to see Sep 2006 Bollymeter?
Bollymeter would get updated
Bollymeter would get updated at the end of the first week of every month, to take into account the performance of the last movie released in the previous month. So, Sep-2006 Bollymeter would be published by the end of first week October.
Thanks for your support!
